Our very own Dax stars in his biggest film role yet, after spending three months on set last year. Sadly it’s the first production I wasn’t able to attend myself, as I was busy building Vista Canine up here and couldn’t leave the business for that long. I was still heavily involved behind the scenes though, doing all of Dax’s training for the role and working through planning meetings with the director and crew in Auckland before filming began.
Film work like this is something I absolutely love because it requires a very different level of training than most people get to see. Dogs need to perform precise behaviours on cue, stay focused in incredibly distracting environments, cameras and special effects, and repeat the same scenes over and over while remaining consistent. Dax’s speciality in being a bite/attack trained dog takes this to another level, especially to be clear enough to work safely around crew and other actors.
I’ve been training Dax for film work his entire life, and he’s now appeared in more than 10 films and TV productions, including M3GAN, Disney’s Mulan, Chief of War, The Legend of Baron To’a… and, of course, the true career highlight - Shorty Street 🤣
