WAG’s Dog of the Month - October
🌟 Mac 🌟
Mac is a nearly 4 year old (Jan) Working line German Shepherd.
Most of you probably have probably seen him nutting off, as he has a bit of an ego! He likes to think he's the best but with that, he's pretty on to it!
Out of all 4 of my big dogs he's been by far the easiest to train. He has the attitude to work, please and get the job done. He just does what I say.
Mac is my husband's dog and I wasn't even going to train him at agility but I found myself outside training and he loved it. He didn't come up through the classes at club he was already competing at the odd show before he had even been to WAG grounds.
It literally took Mac a week to weave from 0 to 12 straight poles. I explain to people that he has a clear mind, he doesn't argue or over think, he just gets on with it and does it.
Mac in the ring is such an honest lad he literally just does what he's told. At Mac's 3rd show I think it was I broke my leg while I was running him in a Jumpers C.
He's not a dog that anyone could handle or run as getting him into the shoot has to be done carefully as the dogs liked to bark at him and he likes to bark back.
While I was in hospital getting my leg sorted, I found someone to run Mac for the day. Another Sheperd owner and lover, Nicki Oade. She was pretty nervous but once she got out there she realised how cool he was. His 3rd ever show, barely trained, being handled by a complete stranger he had never met before and they only had a 5f run together. She couldn't believe it and loved him from then.
NZDAC happened to be in my backyard Morrinsville that same year I was broken (a month later) so I asked Nicki if she was interested in running him at DAC. She was up for the challenge. After having 2 JC runs with him and one very small training together she wasn't expecting anything. DAC was also his first ever show in startes too. However they went out there and got a 3rd in JC and a 3rd in startes which got Mac into both finals! Something I never ever thought would ever happen. This was all because he's a dog who just gets on with the job, I was so proud of him for running for someone else so early on his agility journey. Coming away with places was just amazing. It was bitter sweet not being able to run him but to be able to watch him succeed with someone else was very cool.
We do agility for fun and we dont do a lot of it, so he still is in the lower classes. He recently picked up his 1st JC win at Tauranga show 2 years after that 3rd ever show where I ended up in hospital!
Going forward I just want to be able to continue to run him. He loves it and he really has fun while he's out there. We make a pretty cool team and as long as we are having fun i dont care about the outcome.
At home Mac enjoys running over the farm with me while I work, I have lost count of how many rabbits he has caught!
He's a very cool lad who's a big teddy bear! He will happily sit on the couch next to you, lay on the bed with his head on you. He loves people and pats! So dont be scared of him!
He's an all rounder and for me who never wanted a GSD he's really cool and I definitely have a new outlook on shepherds!
