🐶💉 We often get asked the question, why do puppies need more than one vaccination?

We recommend puppies receive booster vaccinations every 3–4 weeks from around 6–8 weeks of age until they’re at least 16 weeks old.

The reason is something called maternal antibodies – special antibodies mum passes down to her puppies. These give your pup early protection, but they also block vaccines from working properly.

By giving a series of booster shots, we make sure that when mum’s antibodies fade (which is thought to be at around 16 weeks of age) your puppy already has their own strong protection from vaccines.

This keeps them safe from serious diseases at a time when they’re most vulnerable.

Have you ever wondered what happens when your pet undergoes a dental procedure? 🤔

While your pet is under general anaesthesia we will perform a comprehensive oral exam and clean the teeth with an ultrasonic scaler and then a polisher.

Most of the time we will also perform dental radiographs to identify any problems underneath the gumline and highlight any teeth that may need to be extracted. An example of dental pathology we can only see on X-rays is this cat’s premolar with Tooth Resorption. We couldn’t see the crown (visible portion) of the tooth, but below the gumline some of the root structure is still present and being broken down (see circled area on picture)

Around 80% of cats and dogs over the age of 2 have periodontal disease, so booking your pet in for annual dental procedures is the most effective way to keep their oral health in check 🦷🐈

With the end of our Teat sealing completed for the year, our Whatawhata and Gordonton clients went into a draw to win a goodie bag. I think our Whatawhata client is pretty chuffed with his goodie bag!

Sweetie Cat was the purrfect patient for his revisit exam yesterday. Sweetie had bacterial Otitis Externa (an infection of the external ear canal). Fortunately Sweetie’s owners have been diligently treating his ear with the prescribed medication and the issue has resolved.

Common causes of ear disease in cats include parasites, allergies, foreign bodies and polyps.

Signs your cat may have an ear infection:
- Excessive scratching of the ear
- Shaking/flicking head repeatedly
- Smelly discharge from the ear
- Holding the ear downward

If your cat is showing any of the symptoms listed, please book them in with us for a checkup. We can perform an otoscopic exam and collect samples for cytology to further characterise the issue and create a treatment plan to get them feeling better. 🐈 💙
