πŸ” The Tale of the Lucky Chicken and the Skilled Hands of Gordonton Clinic.
The Gordonton Clinic isn't just a haven for dogs and cats; Our team of experienced veterinarians is well-versed in the intricate needs of exotic animals, treating everything from curious guinea pigs and ancient turtles to shimmering lizards and, of course, birds of every feather.

We recently had a beloved family pet chicken come in that had been bitten by a dog. One of our exotic vets Jo, immediately assessed the situation. Due to the extent of the laceration, the decision was made to perform surgery under general anesthesia.

🩺 Fact: Anesthesia is always high-risk for birds, but our team's experience and knowledge allow us to perform these critical procedures safely when a pet’s life depends on it!

Jo stitched the torn skin, turning a traumatic wound into a perfectly closed surgical repair, Nurse Sam monitored the patient's vitals throughout the procedure. While the chicken was under anaesthesia, they also checked to ensure there were no other injuries. Luckily for the chicken there were none. Once she had woken up and recovered from anaesthetic she was sent home with some anti-inflammatory/Pain relief and antibiotics. She has made a full recovery and is back with her other chicken friends living her best life.

On that note we currently do not have an exotic vet on Fridays for the time being.
Below are some before and after photos of Jo's amazing's stitching skills. (The before photo is at the bottom - WARNING contains photos of real surgery, can be quite graphic for some)

🐾 Meet Our Valued Staff: Kate, Companion Animal & Exotic Vet
We are pleased to introduce Kate to those who don't know her, one of our dedicated Companion Animal & Exotic Vets at Gordonton.

Kate is an amazing asset to the team, and she is well-loved by all her clients and patients.

Little bit about Kate, she grew up in Auckland and studied at Massey University in Palmerston North, graduating in 2021. Kate spent her first year in practice as a small animal vet in South Taranaki before heading up north to join the Global Vets team. Kate enjoys interacting with pets and their owners daily and strives to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of pets of all shapes, sizes and species. Kate is particularly interested in surgery and clinical pathology.

She is currently on medical leave but we are hoping to see her back in the new year.
Look out for who will be getting reintroduced soon.🐾

Are You Prepared For Friday 31st October?

It's Halloween, and for some Pets and their owners, it's not a favourite time of the year.
For those that live within town and have 'Trick or Treaters' come pass, you probably have already started to batten down the hatches, gotten out the gear to help reduce your pets stress levels and have the signs up on the front gate, asking for no little visitors!

But for those that do enjoy it, and are planning house parties please remember your pets may not be so keen on it. So have somewhere safe that your pets can go to get away from everyone, ensure that they don't get into mischief by eating objects that may harm them, and also remind your visitors that your pets don't do candy and sweets and dispose of their lolly wrappers into bins, where they can't be gotten.

Stay safe and have fun this Friday night, but if it all turns to custard and your pet needs Vet care, then please contact Waikato After Hours Veterinary Hospital on (07)839 5656.
