We love a good reunion story 🐈🏡❤️

✨ Miracles can happen - reunited after 5 years missing! 🐾

Young Bowie, a unique, light-ginger tabby cat, was just one year old when he disappeared from his home and was missing for five years. According to his guardian, one day he just simply didn’t come home. They searched everywhere for him - including putting up posters, offering a reward, sharing posts in community groups, and contacting their local vets with no luck... yet never truly giving up hope, even as the years passed.

Then recently, something remarkable happened!

Bowie was discovered living underneath a house nearly 40 kilometres from where he went missing! A kind member of the public had been feeding him for a couple of months whilst trying to gain his trust to get him checked for a microchip. They were unaware that he belonged to someone who had been missing him for five incredibly long years.

And here’s where the story becomes pure magic. Bowie has two different coloured eyes, one blue and one green - a unique feature that makes him unforgettable. The person caring for him noticed those striking eyes and, without knowing his history or name, started calling him… Bowie. The exact same name his family had given him years earlier!

When that kind member of the public was finally able to get his microchip scanned, they reached out to our support office who were able to contact his original guardian. That initial phone call that Bowie’s guardian had long hoped for and the reunion itself was very emotional.

“After 5 years, standing there and seeing him again felt surreal…like a miracle we never stopped hoping for,” according to Bowie’s guardian.

He was a little uncertain at first and no longer their tiny one-year-old wee boy anymore, but undeniably their Bowie! Since their incredible reunion, he has settled in well and has made himself right at home again where he belongs!

Stories like this are a great reminder of why microchipping and keeping your details up to date on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register matters so much.

Microchips don’t expire, and hope doesn’t either! Welcome home, Bowie! 💙💚🐾

A kind member of the public brought in a black and white cat who had sadly passed away. She is a female domestic short hair, no microchip or collar, she appears to be a young female (maybe 1-2 years old). She was found outside 126 Cavendish Road. Please call the clinic if you think she may be your furbaby. RIP little lady

Please take care in the heat over the next couple of days and have plenty of water available, even leave a bowl of water outside for the birds

Please take care when exercising your dog on hot or humid days, especially if they're older, overweight, have an underlying disease, or are a flat-faced breed.

Dogs can only sweat small amounts through their paws, which means they can struggle to regulate their temperature 🐶🌡 They rely on panting to cool down and can quickly overheat in hot weather. Dogs with flat faces (such as bulldogs and pugs) have a particularly hard time because they can't always breathe or pant as effectively as other dogs.

Heat stress can occur on days that don’t seem particularly hot to us humans, especially if the humidity is high.

✨ Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: Kupu Kararehe | Animal Names ✨

Learning animal names in te reo Māori can be a great way to celebrate the language – and what better way than by turning it into a game? 🃏 A simple memory card game is a fun way to test yourself (and the whānau!) on the kupu for some of our favourite companion animals.

Here are a few to get you started:
🐶 Kurī = dog
🐱 Ngeru = cat
🐰 Rāpiti = rabbit
🐴 Hōiho = horse
🐭 Kiore = mouse
🐦 Manu = bird
🐠 Ika = fish

👉 Make two sets of cards (one with pictures, one with kupu Māori) and see how many pairs you can match. It’s a fun way to build confidence and keep the learning light.

Did you know? From our NZ Pet Data Report 2024, there are:
📊 1.2 million pet cats in Aotearoa (that’s 40% of homes!)
📊 830,000 pet dogs (31% of homes)
📊106,000 companion horses (3.4% of homes)

It is estimated that almost two thirds (63%) of NZ households share their home with a companion animal!
