With 200 Kaimanawa horses still urgently needing homes from the upcoming muster, and any unhomed horses facing slaughter, I’ve decided to open up more spaces and join the 100 Kaimanawa Horses, 100 Days, 100 Lives Saved project.
I’ll be taking on a delayed taming rotation, which means I’ll be helping to train and rehome an additional 6 horses, starting around June 10th. These horses will initially be stockpiled at Kelly Wilson’s Wild Kaimanawa Sanctuary in Taupō, where they’ll receive hay, feed, and time to adjust in paddocks before coming to my property for their taming period. Once my current client horses progress and free up yard space, I’ll begin working with this next group.
As part of this project, we’re actively looking for more owners who are ready to give a Kaimanawa horse a future. The horses in most urgent need are mature mares and mare + foal combos, but KHH are still accepting applications for horses of all ages.
If adopting isn’t possible for you right now, you can still make a big difference by donating to the 100 Kaimanawa Horses - 100 Days - 100 Lives Saved Givealittle page. Your donation will directly support the stockpiling and transition care for horses waiting for a training space—without this support, up to 30–50 horses from this muster may not be saved. Many owners simply don’t have the facilities or experience to take wild horses directly, and rely on training spots opening up, so these donations are truly life-saving.
