Hair samples are off for DNA testing! Horse registration often includes DNA parentage testing, which is the case for the NZ GypsyCob Association (NZGCA).
People often ask why we go through the paperwork, the expense, and - to be honest - the hassle of registering every single one of our foals, including partbreds. While a horse without papers can be a lovely companion, for us, it is a service we provide to our buyers that guarantees our work.
Why we do it:
β
Registration provides absolute proof of parentage and a certified date of birth. So, you get exactly what is advertised.
β
If you intend to breed your pony, registration is essential for making informed choices for the future, as well as preventing inbreeding.
β
Many shows and breed classes require official registration to enter. Without it, your options can be limited.
β
If you ever need to sell, registered horses appeal to a broader range of serious buyers and competitive riders, which protects the pony's value.
β
Registration gives you access to a supportive network of association members and breed enthusiasts. It also connects you with breed-specific judges who can provide expert opinions on conformation and movement for instance.
Again, while there is absolutely nothing wrong with non-registered horses, if you ever want or need to register one later, be aware it is often not possible. It can be very expensive (late registration fees, for instance) and complex - often involving contacting multiple people or needing to get other horses in the line registered first.
That's why we do the legwork now so our buyers have total peace of mind later.
