Hi all,
As promised, here is the video of the meeting from Monday 25th May discussing the press release and the transfer of the land to Council.
I would like to reiterate that this is an opportunity for us to review how we manage Woodhill Sands, reset how we run things, and move forward without the financial burdens of the mortgage and land ownership.
We are still committed to opening to horses and events as soon as possible and our team of independent volunteers are working hard on addressing our resource consent requirements. I believe we are close to addressing these and hope to welcome you back for Winter events as soon as possible.
Any questions or offers for help, please contact the team via Messenger and we will be in touch.
I look forward to seeing you at events held at Woodhill soon.
Todd Wilkin

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mike Orange from Roll and Fold for generously manufacturing and donating guttering for our buildings at Woodhill Sands.

This incredible contribution will make a massive difference to the facility, helping prevent water spilling from the roofs and keeping the surrounding areas much drier and safer through the wetter months.

We are hugely grateful for Mike’s support, generosity, and willingness to help improve Woodhill Sands for everyone who uses and enjoys the facility. Thank you for being part of the journey with us - your contribution is truly appreciated. Check out www.rollandfold.nz

We’d like to share an update on the next steps for Woodhill Sands so you can understand where things are at.

A lot of visible work has recently been carried out on site, and the progress behind the scenes is also extremely encouraging. We thank all our partners and supporters for their ongoing contributions to the site and our activities.

Woodhill Sands Trust and the council also continue to work together on a sustainable plan for our future.

Since the time the land was purchased, the council has acted as a loan guarantor and contributed significant grant support. In late 2025 – following a sequence of consenting, legal, operational factors and fluctuating patronage – meeting loan repayments and the cost of operations became much more challenging, in spite of the council providing additional funding support. Following a recent review of the Trust’s position by the current trustees and despite our best efforts, the financial pressures we have faced remain unmanageable.

On 27 February 2026, the council in their role as guarantor needed to step in and take over the outstanding loan.

In light of recent events, the council reached a decision last week (5 May). This reflects Woodhill Sands’ role as a regionally significant facility in Auckland’s equestrian network but also acknowledges the Trust has been in an unsustainable financial position for some time. The council needs to take appropriate steps that manage the impact to ratepayers of taking on the loan.

A key element of the council’s decision is to carry out a six-month open expression of interest (EOI) process to identify financially sustainable options for the land. While not guaranteed, we hope this process will flush out a go-forward model for us to operate profitably and ideally keep equestrian services as a priority. The council and the local board both support this approach, and we intend to fully participate in this process.

We are also continuing to work on re-opening for regular events as soon as possible, which the council remains supportive of.

This is a positive step for the future of Woodhill Sands. It allows us to move forward in a sustainable manner without the financial strain of the loan and capital repayments.

We will be holding an online update for those of you who have questions about this on Monday 25th May at 7pm on Teams. An event has been set up for those of you who want to attend.

Thank you all for your continued support. All of us here on the various volunteer teams remain committed to having horses return to Woodhill Sands and we are hopeful that we are almost there.

Massive thanks to Sue Batchelor who had some spare time this week to pop up and get some painting done. Sue, a member of the Waimauku Adult ride, got a heap of ground rails painted as well as helping set up for our PD crew today.
Also a big thanks to Louise Blair who has been supervising the PD crews on Thursdays and Fleur Weaver who stepped in to help during the school holidays. We have an amazing community ❤️ Princess Rouge of Woodhill, says hi to everyone she is missing trying to steal your toasted sandwiches and salmon bagels...

Look at these great gals, after a hard day at work this team of dedicated riders pitched in to continue the rail taping at our latest working Bee, huge thanks to Alison Summers, Janet O'Meara Maya Hegh Hayley Drury (repeat offender), Rebekah Hayes with Emma Buckingham starting us off (before running off to two other meetings!) And Tony Bult allowing us to moonlight at the nursery. Great to see various members of our equestrian community represented here tonight, dressage, adult ride, riding schools, eventers and jumpers, judges and stewards!

Emma Buckingham had crew down at T & M Nurseries (thanks Tony Bult for the use of the shed!) With Tina French, Hayley Drury, Tash Epplett, Yasmin Livingstone, Louise Blair, Janine Taylor and Brooke Scrivener busy taping rails. Thanks all you legends! Great afternoon of work and we are now just that little bit closer! Feel like you would like to be part of these afternoons! Keep your eyes on our page for more updates!!

The work continues at Woodhill Sands and things are seriously starting to come together with the support of the wider community 🙌✨

We’re incredibly lucky to have the support of our neighbour Adam Martin, who has generously loaned us equipment to help cultivate the surfaces, this is a total game changer for the arenas 🚜🔥

A massive shoutout to Shelley Ross, who has put in an enormous amount of work on this project 💪🐎 Her attention to detail and dedication are next level, and she’s confident the surfaces are going to be absolutely top quality, setting them up to be better than ever 👌

We can’t wait for everyone to see (and ride on!) the results soon 👀

We know you’re all keen to know when this will be, and we’re working hard behind the scenes to make sure we can open with a bang as soon as possible 🎉
