We always recommend feeding your horse before exercise or travel, and here’s why:
A horse’s stomach is divided into two sections:
🔹Glandular region (bottom half): protected by a mucus layer and holds the acid.
🔹Non-glandular region (top half): unprotected and highly sensitive to acid.

When a horse moves or travels on an empty stomach, stomach acid can splash onto this unprotected area, causing irritation and discomfort. Over time, this can contribute to the development of gastric ulcers.
Providing a small meal of forage such as lucerne hay before exercise or travel helps create a natural “mat” in the stomach, reducing acid splash and supporting gastric comfort.
