Rehoming Lithuanian shelter pets into homes in the Netherlands - to find kindness, love and safety.

Rescue Dogs and Cats The Netherlands is run entirely through volunteer work. Based in the Netherlands, we work in collaboration with several animal shelters in Lithuania, helping to adopt and rehome rescue dogs and cats to the Netherlands and allowing them to experience the love, kindness and safety that they deserve.

Rescue Dogs and Cats The Netherlands was founded in 2020 by Julija and Ramun

e, two animal lovers who always had a desire to help homeless animals. The initiative quickly grew to a group of more than 20 people working voluntarily in re-homing rescues from Lithuania to The Netherlands, Belgium and some other countries. In Lithuania the number of abandoned dogs and cats is very large. There are plenty of shelters that are doing a great job to help them to survive and doing their best to find them home. We truly feel heartbroken knowing that there are so many animals suffering from different sorts of abuse and neglect. Therefore, this project is our way to contribute to the wellbeing of rescue dogs and cats. The goal of this website is to tell you more about dogs and cats in need and to facilitate their adoption and rehoming to The Netherlands. If you are looking to adopt, you will have to fill out the application form, your answers are an important part of helping us to be sure that the pet is a good match for you, your family and your lifestyle. We will provide you with all the information about the pet, his or her life story, character, behavior and other things you need to know. Isabelle is a beautiful one-year-old cat with a striking tri-colour coat that glows like a sunset—patches of amber, white, and charcoal blending in perfect harmony 💖 Though playful and curious by nature, she carries a quiet shyness born from a past marked by hardship and unkindness 🥺 She watches the world with wide, thoughtful eyes, drawn to the warmth of human company but hesitant to trust too quickly. Her heart opens slowly, especially when coaxed with treats and gentle patience, revealing a spirited little soul who loves to chase feathers and nap in sunbeams. Isabelle is searching for a loving home where kindness is consistent, and where someone understands that healing takes time—but the reward is a loyal, affectionate companion who will brighten every corner of their life ❤️

Sirijus is a striking tuxedo cat, with sleek black fur contrasted by a crisp white chest and paws. At about five years old, he had seen more than his share of troubles. When Sirijus was taken to the shelter, volunteers noticed his curious nature. He would come to greet every new visitor with bright, inquisitive eyes, always eager to make a connection 💕

But Sirijus has a big fear—he doesn't like being touched. Everyone often wondered why such a friendly cat would shy away from a simple stroke.

It wasn’t until his vet checkup that they understood. They found three air gun pellets lodged in his body, silent reminders of a cruel past 😢Someone had shot at this gentle creature 💔

Now safe and cared for, Sirijus is slowly learning that not all humans are threats. He is FIV positive, which means he needs to be the only kitty in the house.

Despite everything, Sirijus’ hope never dimmed. He looks at each new visitor dreaming they might be the one to give him the forever home where he could feel safe enough to be touched—and truly loved 🥹❤️

Serchan – a cat whose destiny was meant to be very different🤩.
He was caught under the “Trap–Neuter–Return” program and the plan was simple: help him, neuter him and release him back to the street. But the moment he arrived at the shelter, it became clear – this was no ordinary feral.

Serchan turned out to be young, big, affectionate – a true gentle teddy bear🐻. The kind of cat you couldn’t send back to the cold streets. The street is not his place. He is too fantastic, too kind, too sweet to live outside. He has so much love to give and he deserves to receive love back!❤

Serchan needs a real home. A home where his size will be seen as a gift, and his gentleness – as the most precious treasure😻.

The story of how Haskis came to the shelter is a sad one. Shelter volunteers received a message, that a cat had strayed into the care of two women. He was in a bad shape and in a desperate need of help. Upon arrival volunteers were stunned from what they saw (and it is hard to surprise long time shelter volunteers).

Haskis' entire head was swollen and had several open wounds. He was meowing pitifully, obviously in pain😢. When he was given food, he ate greedily. He was immediately rushed to the vets. During the visit vets checked if Haskis is chipped, and he was🥳. What a relief, he will be reunited with his people! But the phone call was not a happy one... Haskis was missing for 2 years!😱 His former owner didn't even look for him and she doesn't want him back now. She coldly said ''I don't need him''.

But luckily for Haskis, he is needed and he is worth to have a happy life❤. Volunteers worked hard to get him back on his feet and show him, that not all people are bad. Haskis has recovered and is ready to find a loving home😻.

Haskis is a part of a bonded trio together with Bajoras and Lokiukas. Unfortunately they all have FIV😔. They can be adopted separately (in which case these handsome boys would have to be the only cats in the house, or live together with another FIV cat), but if anyone could take all three, it would be a miracle!✨✨✨

Lokiukas was found by a kind-hearted woman, who did not pass by when she saw a sick cat. This cat did not really want to be saved, but is this an obstacle to someone who wants to help? Of course not! And we are very thankful for that! ❤

It turns out that Lokiukas is very cozy and affectionate to humans, so shelter volunteers concluded, that he was a former pet… His whole body was scarred, his ears were bitten, and he was sick. Pet cats are not accustomed to life in the streets and they get into bad condition really fast. Veterinarians did some tests and they showed that Lokiukas was FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) positive. Which was to be expected, because homeless and unneutered cats fight over territory and thus transmit intractable viruses to each other

Now Lokiukas is all better. He is a handsome and a very affectionate cat, who has seen and experienced a lot in his short life. And Lokiukas has already demonstrated his special mind, ingenuity and stubbornness to the shelter volunteers😼. This smart guy has escaped from his cage four times, which no other cat has managed to do so far! And when caught and locked up again, he would look out of the cage dissatisfied, with pitiful eyes, sad and not understanding why he was locked up again. Lokiukas wants to move freely and make friends with everyone. But because of his positive FIV diagnosis, he is forced to be separated from the other cats.
However, despite his diagnosis, he is incredibly charming, intelligent, full of energy and ready to captivate the hearts of his future owners😻.

Meet Bajoras🐱 His name means ''Nobleman'', but his journey to the shelter was far from royal. His owner died, and the neighbour decided, that the best way to transport a cat was to put him in a bag, and then put the bag in a bucket. That’s how “packaged” Bajoras arrived at the shelter. The neighbour, who brought him in said, that the cat was scratching like crazy. Well, everyone would probably defend themselves, if they were forced into a bag and taken out of their home...

But enough about the past, let’s talk about Bajoras himself. The name says it all – he’s a true nobleman🤴. Proud, elegant, sweet and friendly. Although he’s had to go through a lot of stress in the past, he’s now waiting for a new home, where he can feel like a king again. Would you like to give Bajoras a home?🏠❤

We don’t even know where to begin… Šiaulių Letenėlė shelter is home to three gentlemen – Bajoras, Lokiukas and Haskis. All of them are big, handsome, each with their own character. By fate (or rather, the lack of space), they had to be placed together in the same room.

And guess what? They became friends! 😻
Three adult cats who could have chosen to fight, but instead they chose friendship – they sleep cuddled up, groom each other, and stick together everywhere. A real dynamic trio!

And yes, we can already hear people saying: “Oh my, it’s hard enough to find space for one cat, and here are three!” Yes, they are three. Yes, they are not small. But they are calm, affectionate, friendly. They don’t scratch or run around – they just lounge peacefully, soaking up the sunshine. 🌞
Surely there must be a home out there for these three gentlemen?

Of course, the chances of finding one home for all three together are about 0.00001%. But it’s worth trying – because sometimes miracles do happen. And if not, each of them is waiting for their very own human.🧍❤

I am Drakaris. No, not a dragon. A cat🐱 But my fiery soul still burns, even though it had been extinguished. I ended up on the streets… Thin, hungry and betrayed. I was not born homeless, I once had a home. Only house cats get so completely exhausted when abandoned in the streets…

I had a home and slept on pillows. Now - a cage. I DON’T LIKE the cage! I protest day and night! I meow, demand, explain my rights: “Where is cat freedom?! Where is my sunny balcony corner?!”

But they say: “Drakaris, you don’t really like other cats…”
Well, yes. I have principles. I’m a director, not a diplomat. But I love humans. Come, pet me, adore me and I’ll make you my palace servant😻 Just… sometimes I’ll nibble gently so you don’t forget who you’re dealing with😼
