With the recent rain we have seen an increase in Summer mastitis cases. Summer mastitis is one of the most serious diseases we see in dry cows and in-calf heifers, typically occurring between June and September. It can progress quickly and, in some cases, become life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Animals most at risk are those with teat injuries grazing in areas with high fly populations, particularly in damp, humid conditions or near rivers, marshy ground or heavy hedgerows.

Signs to watch for include swollen or painful teats, a high temperature, lethargy, weight loss, hind leg swelling and kicking at the flank. The udder can begin to swell up to a week before the animal appears unwell, so early detection makes a real difference.

If you notice any of these signs, please contact your Highfield vet as soon as possible. Early intervention gives the best chance of saving the quarter or teat involved.

Highfield were proud to support the Blessington Mart Annual Suffolk Cross Show and Sale! 🐑 We have sponsored this event for a number of years now and it is always a great day celebrating quality livestock and the dedication of our farming community. Highfield clients were among the winners with prizes presented by Brian. This year saw a record number in the ewe lambs class with over 50 entries!
