🔷Meet The Team At Kilcoole Vets🔷

Claire 🥰

Originally from Greystones, Claire knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals. A lifelong animal lover, she has always had pets and is currently kept on her toes by her two cats - Flower and W**d - named with a wink to her love of plants.

Claire joined the KV team back in Feb 2024 and has quickly become a valued member of the team. She is a dedicated veterinary nurse and a busy mum to her young son, balancing family life with her passion for patient care.

When she’s not in work, Claire is happiest outdoors- walking, gardening, or practicing yoga. Her green thumb and love of nature make her the go to plant expert among the team.
With her calm, caring nature, Claire helps ensure every animal feels safe and comforted and receives the highest standards of care.

🔥 HEAT STROKE IN PETS 🔥

As the temperature increases it is important to know the signs of heat stroke in pets. Heat stroke can be life threatening therefore it is vital to know the symptoms. What to look out for is:

✅ Excessive panting, drooling or difficulty breathing
✅ Vomiting and or diarrhoea
✅ Lethargy/weakness
✅ A change in colour of the gums
✅ Dizziness
What can you do to avoid heat stroke?

✅ Walk your pets at dusk or dawn avoiding direct sunlight
✅ Ensure your pet has a constant water source throughout the entire day
✅ If your pet is in the garden it is vital they have a shaded spot where they can escape direct sunlight
✅ NEVER leave your pet in the car regardless if the window is open or not
✅ Before walking your pet place the palm of your hand on concrete for 5 seconds, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet
✅ Invest in a cooling matt
✅ If your pet is showing any of the signs of heat stroke act immediately and call your veterinary clinic
✅ Dogs with flat faces such as a shih tzu or French bulldog or pets with a underlying conditions are at a higher risk and need to take extra care.

We hope that everyone enjoys that ☀️

🔷Attention All Dog Owners🔷

Have you ever noticed your pooch scooting their bottom along the ground or excessively licking their rear end?
This could be a sign that their a**l glands need to be expressed. Regular expression of these glands can help prevent uncomfortable and potentially serious health issues.

Luckily, if you’re a member of our Pet Health Club, a**l gland expression is included in your membership. Our experienced veterinary team will ensure your dog’s a**l glands are expressed safely and effectively.

🐾 Superstar Alert! 🐾

We had the absolute pleasure of seeing Ozzy the Rottweiler for his annual health check and vaccinations this week! At 10 years young and weighing in at a solid 41kg, this handsome gentleman is as charming as ever. 💪🖤

He was the best boy during his visit—calm, gentle, and an absolute pro with our vet Maria (who couldn’t resist posing for a photo with her famous patient 📸).

Did we mention he’s a bit of a local celeb? You can follow his adventures over on his very own Instagram page! 🐶✨

Thanks for visiting us, Ozzy , we’re already looking forward to your next check-up!

🔷Neutering Your Cat : Why choose Kilcoole Vets?🔷

- Our veterinary nursing team will provide you with tailored instructions dependant on the surgery type, pet breed, size and temperament.

- All patients receive in-house Laser therapy to speed up wound healing

- All patients receive intra-operative IV fluids to ensure their blood pressure is maintained throughout surgery

- We don’t skimp on pain relief and ensure each animal has sufficient and strong pain relief

- We include minimum of 2 complementary post-op checks to ensure your cat is healing and feeling better

- We give extra cuddles and have the softest blankets to ensure your cat wakes up from anaesthetic warm and cosy.

The Benefits:

✅ Neutering your female cat helps to avoid mammary tumours and womb infections- and the health risks of pregnancy.

✅ Your cat is likely to be less stressed about other animals and its environment after neutering. Neutering also lessens their likelihood to spray and mark territory indoors.

✅ Unneutered male cats tend to be more aggressive , to roam and fight over females and territory. This can make them susceptible to abscesses and diseases such as feline aids (FIV) and leukaemia (FeLV)

This is Kiki – our resident emotional support specialist 🐶💖
Kiki belongs to our vet, Maria! 😊
She’s here to boost morale, finish your lunch when you “accidentally” drop it, and make sure everyone leaves the clinic with at least three dog hairs on their clothes (no exceptions).
She doesn’t have a vet degree, but she does have a PhD in vibes. 🎓✨

🔷Top Tips @ Kilcoole Vets🔷

Microchipping Month - June 2025

Every day in Ireland numerous dogs go missing or are stolen. This is heart breaking for the owners involved. There are some good points to note in the poster below from Mighty Dog Graphics.
Microchipping of dogs is very important (and a legal requirement for all dogs) and is the surest way to be reunited with your dog should they be lost or stolen. Remember though the chip must be registered with your up to date details to be effective. If you're unsure if your dog's microchip is registered to you correctly then we can help.
Kilcoole Vets can scan your dog and check it against the databases.
Get in touch with us for more information and to request a chip check for your pet.

Our Story

Kilcoole Vets is a specialised small animal veterinary practice. The clinic opened at the beginning of March 2009. Kilcoole Vets is owned and run by veterinary surgeon Gail Nic Eoghain and veterinary nurse/behaviourist Shane Mc Dermott. Both had worked in veterinary practice for over ten years before establishing their own clinic. As lifelong pet owners themselves they share a vision of a companion animal hospital providing exemplary patient care and client service. Kilcoole Vets strives to embody that vision. After inspection by the Veterinary Council of Ireland, the premises have been accredited as a Registered Veterinary Hospital. Under the practice accreditation scheme this is the highest level attainable. The practice is located in the Whitethorn Centre in Kilcoole village (beside Tesco) and has ample free parking on its doorstep. On entering their bright and spacious reception and waiting area you will be welcomed by friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. To accommodate their clients’ busy schedules, Kilcoole Vets is open 7 days a week including bank holidays and offers convenient opening hours with early to late hours. A dedicated emergency service is provided 24/7 and 365 days outside of those hours. A comprehensive range of health care services are provided under one roof for all small animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, small furry pets, birds and reptiles. Kilcoole Vets tailors a health care programme for each pet, through every stage of their life.

They also have Pet Health Plans available to save pet owners money and spread the costs of their pet’s preventative health care needs. Finance options are available on products and for veterinary services/treatments.
