Did you know we offer in house faecal egg count testing for fluke and worm at our Cavan office?

We can test individual samples if you have concerns about a single animal's thrive and condition or pooled samples to get an overall picture of a group of animals.

Make informed decisions around your dosing regime with our vets and the insight of this excellent tool as your herds and flocks move out to pasture over the coming weeks and are exposed to parasites

What are we looking for when assessing a cowโ€™s health? These are some of the things that should be at the top of your radar when deciding whether to seek vet advice or not:

Behaviour โ€“ abnormal, not eating, hanging back, less responsive.
Temperature โ€“ normal temp around 38oc
Respiratory rate โ€“ a normal rate is between 26 โ€“ 50 breaths per minute
Body condition score โ€“ thin or fat
Rumination โ€“ a healthy cow will spend 6 hours chewing the cud
Coat and skin โ€“ patches of hair loss
Mobility โ€“ are they walking comfortably on all four feet?
Udder โ€“ any signs of mastitis? Pain, heat, reddening, swelling?
Sunken eyes โ€“ a sign of dehydration

There are many other things to look out for but these are the key areas to keep an eye on.

WHEN SHOULD I VACCINATE AGAINST BLUETONGUE?

We are facing an uncertain year, but it is probable that the Bluetongue virus (BTV-3) will continue to spread within livestock dense areas in early summer. This could significantly impact animal welfare and cause economic losses. Currently, vaccination is the only way to protect your stock and reduce risk on farm.

Contact your vet to find out how to fully protect your animals ahead of the high-risk period.

๐Ÿ„ **Calf Care: The First 30 Days Matter Most** ๐Ÿ„

The first 30 days of a calfโ€™s life are critical and young calves are especially vulnerable. During this time, calves are still developing their immune systems and can struggle to regulate their body temperature โ€” especially if their environment isnโ€™t ideal.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ **Heat is Vital**
Keeping calves warm is essential for strong growth and disease prevention. Calf jackets and infra-red lamps are excellent tools to help maintain body temperature, particularly during colder weather.

If a calf appears dull, slow, or unwell, providing additional heat can make a significant difference in their recovery. Warmth supports their immune system and helps them conserve energy to fight illness.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ **Watch the Environment**
Itโ€™s not just about temperature โ€” comfort matters too:
โœ”๏ธ Eliminate draughts
โœ”๏ธ Keep bedding dry and deep
โœ”๏ธ Avoid damp, cold lying areas

Cold stress can quickly set calves back, reducing growth rates and increasing susceptibility to disease.

A warm, dry, draught-free environment in those crucial first 30 days sets calves up for a healthier, stronger future. ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒพ
