Castration is the removal of testicles in dogs (also known as orchiectomy). It is done for a number of reasons, including the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, the prevention of roaming of male dogs and the elimination of the risk of testicular cancer and other age related conditions.

The “Neutering Male Dogs (Castration)” leaflet is part of a suite of information leaflets created by XLVets Ireland for pet owners of our thirty member practices nationwide. These leaflets are designed to support conversations with your vet and cover common health topics in small animals. Ask your vet about the full collection of information leaflets at your next visit.

While there is still uncertainty about how widespread or severe bluetongue will be this year, one message was clear: the risk is real, the potential losses are significant, and vaccination is the most effective protection available.

In his article, Kevin O Sullivan from Glasslyn Vet Clinic recaps on a recent XLVets webinar for farmers on preparing for bluetongue, and offers advice to farmers on what bluetongue is, the threat it posses and vaccination available.
