It has been a long tough spring for all farmers and as a mixed practice vet/farmer in North Cork, Eamon O'Flynn DVM of Bluepool Veterinary acknowledges the difficulties and loss of production lameness can have on a flock. The pain caused by lameness can reduce body condition by 20% and have a knock-on effect on fertility and productivity through reduced conception rates.

In this article, Eamon highlights the most common causes of lameness in sheep and offers farmers a 5 point plan in dealing with it - from treatment to vaccination and culling sources of infection.

XLVets Ireland is delighted to welcome Clinic na gCapall to our member-owned group of independent veterinary practices. Located in Co. Carlow, Clinic na gCapall is an equine-only practice founded in 1997 by Jeremiah O Sullivan, as an ambulatory practice, primarily servicing thoroughbred racing and stud clients in the Carlow and Kilkenny area. In 2020, William Toomey joined Jeremiah as a partner, and together they lead a team of four additional vets, two nurses, one technician and four office staff.

Speaking on the membership, Jeremiah said “We see considerable benefit in becoming part of a group of like-minded independent practices that are committed to clinical excellence, professional collaboration and the long-term strength of independently owned veterinary businesses. We value the opportunity to share knowledge and experience with fellow members, to learn from the wider group, and to contribute our own expertise in equine orthopaedics, imaging and reproduction where relevant.”

XLVets Ireland extends a warm welcome to the entire team at Clinic na gCapall. We look forward to working with Jeremiah, William and the team, in their endeavours to promote clinical excellence and professional collaboration and their commitment to independent veterinary.

Yesterday XLVets Skillnet hosted an Equine Radiology Training session for vets, focusing on how to take sport horse X-ray sets.

Our trainers, Jeremiah O’Sullivan from Clinic na gCapall and Donagh McDonnell from Longford Animal Health Centre, delivered a practical, hands-on session covering radiographic imaging for sales and pre-purchase examinations.

It was great to see such strong engagement throughout the day, with attendees sharing experiences and discussing real-life cases and techniques.

This event was kindly supported by Medray Veterinary.

Castration is the removal of testicles in dogs (also known as orchiectomy). It is done for a number of reasons, including the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, the prevention of roaming of male dogs and the elimination of the risk of testicular cancer and other age related conditions.

The “Neutering Male Dogs (Castration)” leaflet is part of a suite of information leaflets created by XLVets Ireland for pet owners of our thirty member practices nationwide. These leaflets are designed to support conversations with your vet and cover common health topics in small animals. Ask your vet about the full collection of information leaflets at your next visit.

Surya’s Story

When Surya Bikram Sapkota returned to his village in Madi Nepal after ten long years working abroad, he carried more than just his belongings, he carried hope. At 46, he dreamed of building a future at home, where his family could thrive without having to leave their community behind.

He started small, with just five indigenous goats and a determination to make it work. But like so many rural farmers, the challenges were real: limited resources, traditional practices, and uncertainty about how to grow.

Everything began to change when he joined the Community Livestock Production Strengthening Project, delivered by Vets Without Borders Ireland and their Nepalese partners Animal Health Training and Consultancy Service. Through regular group meetings and hands-on training, Surya gained not just knowledge, but confidence.

After a two-day goat farming training, he transformed the way he worked. He improved how he cared for his animals, grew better fodder, and managed his small farm with new skills and renewed belief. With continued support, his herd grew from five goats to twenty.

XLVets Ireland are proud to support Vets Without Borders Ireland in helping farmers like Surya rewrite their futures, right where they are.
