Did you know that Dr. Agapis teaches Disaster Response & Preparedness? She has lectured at the University of Illinois, University of Missouri, and Tufts University on how to keep families and their 4 legged friends safe during emergencies, as well as, how veterinary personnel should prepare and respond to natural and human-made disasters. So, here are some tips to help you through this weather:

*Disaster preparedness begins with... YOU!

*Always have stocked supplies at home to last you for a minimum of 72 hours if asked to shelter in place. Ideally, supplies should last for 2 weeks! These supplies should include all you need for your human and animal family members, including water.

*Do not drive in heavy rainfall if you can avoid it and do not underestimate rushing water! 6 inches (15 cm) of water can stall your vehicle and carry an adult human away. 12 inches (30cm) can sweep your vehicle away! A road closed means ROAD CLOSED - TURN AROUND.

*Have a practised family evacuation plan and "to-go" kit ready. -Your family should be able to evacuate in less than 2 minutes if directed to do so. This can complicate things for those families with cats. So, remember to check your cat's unique hiding places. Make sure to designate who is in charge of your pets and who is for your children or elderly.

*** Make sure to follow all directions given by the authorities***

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To our beloved AgapiVet family, we kindly ask you take care of yourselves and do regular health checks. Do not put life-saving screening tests off. The same goes for our patients. If you have seen a lump on your pet, please let us know! This week our clinic is offering a free screening for any pet that has a lump on its mammary chain.

Every October, we celebrate World Animal Day. For us at AgapiVet this is a special time, as it allows us to interact with school children and help guide them on how to better care for the animals on our island. This year, we had the honor to visit the 11th Elementary School in Rhodes Town and Kremasti's Junior High School. Over 100 pupils of various ages learned how to read an animal's behavior and had their first lesson in surgery! We hope to one day see some of these young minds as medical professionals in our communities!

Do you smoke at home? Ever wonder how that effects your pets?
Cats are uniquely vulnerable due to their grooming behavior. To***co smoke particles accumulate on their fur and are subsequently ingested, resulting in repeated oral and systemic exposure over time.
Higher risk has been observed in cats living in smoking households, particularly those exposed for five or more years or in homes with multiple smokers, compared to cats in non-smoking environments. Cats whose owners smoked 1–19 ci******es per day demonstrated a significant fourfold increase in the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
The risk is not limited to oral tumors. Cats exposed to household to***co smoke have a 2.4-fold increased risk of malignant lymphoma (95% confidence interval: 1.2–4.5), rising to 3.2-fold after five or more years of exposure (95% confidence interval: 1.5–6.9). Notably, risk increases in a dose- and duration-dependent manner.
Beyond carcinogenesis, to***co smoke exposure disrupts the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in cats. Significant increases have been reported in total oxidant levels, oxidative stress index, lipid hydroperoxides, protein carbonyls, and advanced oxidative protein products, alongside decreased total antioxidant capacity and reduced antioxidant enzyme activity.

Did you know that Dr. Agapis is on her way to become a Diplomate of Shelter Medicine? This is a distinction that less than 40 veterinarians have worldwide! Not only that, she is also working to be a Diplomate in Preventative Medicine. As such, this weekend Dr. Agapis will participate in Cornell University's Shelter Medicine Conference. Please join us in wishing her luck!

AgapiVet would like to wish our Dimitri a safe trip to the United States! For the next 6 weeks Dimitri will be learning from some of the world's best veterinary dermatologists, cardiologists, and surgeons at the University of Illinois! Prior to his return, Dimitri will meet Dr. Agapis to attend the WVC Veterinary Conference in Nashville and a Nexus Orthopedic workshop in Utah! What a great way to conclude his studies and transition to the next stage of his professional journey! Kalo Taxidi!

The past two weeks have been very busy at AgapiVet! We spent a little time at the municipal shelter offering free physical examinations and treatments to the stray dogs and sterilized over 200 dogs and cats at the clinic. All this was made possible by the students of the University of Illinois that worked day and night to help provide the best care possible for these animals in need. An extra big thank you to the University of Illinois, especially Dr. Drew Sullivan and Dr. Clarissa Souza who made this trip a success. Additionally, we'd like to thank the Rhodes Municipality, Hellenic Studies Paideia, the Pan-Rhodian Association, Kostas Arfaras, Dimitrios Galanos, Sofia Pitropaki, Julietta and all the volunteers. This program is truly unique as we not only help the community, promote our beautiful island, but also train the next generation of veterinary professionals so they too can one day go out and do community outreach! We are pleased to announce that throughout the summer, we shall be continuing our free spays and neuter surgeries. Please call the office at 22410-41002 to find out more information!
