How rescue works!
Imagine a dog in desperate trouble. To save them from the trauma of a concrete kennel, a rescue works behind the scenes to coordinate a "home to home" adoption, moving them safely from their old life straight into a new one.
But then, the new adopter looks at the standard adoption fee and says:
“Well, you didn't actually do anything for this specific dog, so I think I'll just pay what I feel like - or actually nothing!”
This has happened recently, revealing a heartbreaking misunderstanding of how rescue actually survives.
The Myth of the "Per Item" Price Tag
When you adopt, you aren't at a supermarket checkout buying a product based on manufacturing costs. You are investing in a lifeline.
Our rescue operates on a non negotiable, blanket fee system for a vital reason. Yes, Dog A might be a straightforward home to home swap with minimal immediate vet spend. But Dog B came in yesterday needing extensive emergency surgery after being hit by a car. Dog C has been in our care for months requiring specialized behavioral rehab and chemo treatment. The fee for Dog A is quite literally the only reason Dog B and Dog C get to live.
The Hidden Safety Net
When someone haggles because "the rescue didn't incur costs," they aren't just shortchanging the next vulnerable animal. They are opting out of Lifetime Rescue Backup.
Your adoption fee buys a lifetime backed by our network. If your life falls apart years from now, we are obligated to take that dog back. If they develop complex behavioral issues, we are there to support you. If they are lost or stolen, our tracking teams are deployed to help find them. When you negotiate the fee, you walk away entirely on your own. No backup.
Sadly, when kindness is taken advantage of, doors close and policies have to change. Rescue isn’t a retail store. There are no discounts on compassion, and there are no clearance sections for survival. Maybe when we are at capacity in the kennels which we normally are, we’ll point the home-to-home keepers your way so you can explain why this option would not be available to them!
