We are aware of the social media posts circulated yesterday, and press coverage today about concerns at a pet cremation provider.
We have chosen not to add the link as some of the images are very distressing.
Whilst we cannot comment on individual businesses and circumstances we haven't independently verified, it is a reminder that both veterinary practices and pet owners should ask their cremation provider not only how pets are cremated, but also how they are collected, stored, identified and returned. Individual cremation is not simply about getting your pets ashes back, but the entire journey.
All pet crematoriums are subject to annual inspections from APHA (the Animal and Plant Health Agency) and they can also carry out spot checks, but these only cover the basic government disposal legislation, not how your companion will be treated behind the scenes.
At Companions at Peace, we are an accredited member of the APPCC (the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria) and follow their code of practice. We are also independently inspected to ensure all of our processes are accurately described, dignified and caring. The Code exists to protect pet owners and veterinary practices from the mis-selling of cremation services and to promote honest, transparent and respectful standards.
We encourage pet owners to ask their veterinary practice how their pet will be looked after, how and when will they be collected, identified, stored, cremated and returned. Individual cremation is not just about receiving ashes back. It is about the whole journey.
This is a difficult and upsetting moment for the profession, but it is also a reminder of why standards matter.
