80 dogs were removed by RSPCA from a house in Bedfordshire 🐢

Two unneutered dogs led to the uncontrollable breeding of Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and cross breeds, and on arrival, the officers were informed that there were about 40 dogs and a cat. Over the course of 5 days, the dogs were removed and found to have been double that number.

While the dogs were well-loved, the owner was over whelmed with the amount of dogs, and was impossible for them all to be cared for properly.

The dogs were living in three rooms which were dark and humid. Puppies were found in boxes and drawers. The rooms smelt of ammonia. As a result if this, most of the dogs were suffering from ammonia burns to their eyes

Many of the dogs were not used to being handled and all needed to learn to walk on leads.

As the dogs were being removed from the home the owner had a sense of relief. But it should never have got so out of hand. Always reach out to the RSPCA or other animal rescues for neutering advice.

The RSPCA officer said "What is really frightening is that this situation came from only two dogs, and a failure to get dogs neutered, so they had an accidental litter and the over-breeding just continued and continued."

All of the dogs were moved to various RSPCA centres around the country to be treated and up for rehoming.

Looking for a dog kennels when you go away?

It is important that you choose one that holds a licence! This is the law (since October 2018).

To find out which dog kennels are licenced in the Bedford Borough Council area or in Central Bedfordshire Council area please visit the below links.

We cannot stress enough the importance of choosing a licenced dog kennels. No licence = no insurance. Also, you may see the front of the kennels looking all nice and welcoming, and the owner giving the "talk" but how do you really know that what they are doing is legal and meeting the animal welfare regulations?

Please check your bonfires.

Please check bonfires before lighting them! ⚠️

Wildlife like hedgehogs, dormice, frogs and toads often seek shelter in the piles of natural materials that are used to build bonfires, and end up killed or seriously injured when they are lit.

For hedgehogs, a bonfire built days in advance can be used as a place to nest or hibernate. The longer your bonfire is sitting there, the more likely a hedgehog will find their way inside.

Here's how to check your bonfire and make a more wildlife-friendly one: https://bit.ly/4nm0ZID

Fireworks Bill: This will be of interest to all the animal lovers who dislike fireworks on behalf of pets, livestock, equine, wildlife and all other animals out there.

πŸŽ† So what's happening to my Fireworks Bill?

You might have noticed that the Fireworks Bill was down to be debated today - but as Parliament is not sitting, it's been moved to a new day. We don't know when or if it'll get a debate - we can’t wait, so I'm carrying on the campaign. During this firework season, I have

βœ… Kept in ongoing contact with Bedfordshire Police and Luton Council to ensure fireworks complaints are being actioned and monitored & information about firework use is distributed.
βœ… Written to supermarkets asking them to stop their shop displays promoting fireworks
βœ… Sponsoring an event in Parliament for the Fireworks Impact Coalition, which will be on the 12th November - if you’re not in Luton North, please encourage your MP to go. This is a nationwide issue.
βœ… Secured a meeting with the new Minister responsible to get an in-person update on how fireworks legislation is being reviewed.
βœ… Working alongside animal, armed forced and mental health charities to spread the word about our campaign to limit the sale of the loudest fireworks.

It's been over a year since I introduced my Bill to Parliament. In that time, the problem hasn't gone away, and I know in Luton, it feels like it's getting worse.

I continue to push for common-sense changes to our fireworks laws. To end the licensing loophole, ban the loudest from public sale & limit their use to licensed pyrotechnic professionals in organised displays.
