Fay Drewry 🏴
England gundog team squad 2026 🏴
Fay Drewry’s journey into the gundog world began nine years ago with a black Labrador named ‘Charlie’
a part show dog with far more enthusiasm for eating birds than retrieving them !
That lively introduction sparked a deep love for working gundogs and set Fay on a path she could never have imagined.
In 2020, she welcomed her first golden retriever, and everything changed. Just a year later came the dog who would become her once in a lifetime partner: FTW & OFTAW Think Twice One Shot ‘Thorn’.
When they first started competing together four years ago at NDNH level, few could have predicted how quickly this partnership would blossom. Thorn’s natural ability, drive, and style carefully bred by Laura Lazzaretto allowed him to progress rapidly alongside the very best Labradors.
Their achievements tell the story of that remarkable rise:
• 2022: First Open test win (ECGRC Open Walked Up)
• 2023: GRC Most Promising Novice Handler, 1st in All Age trial at UGS KES, NGRC Open test winner, SEGS walked-up winner, and Top Dog at Chatsworth
• 2025: GRC Open test winner, part of the winning Sherborne team
• 2026: 2nd place in the WELRC Open field trial, plus winning team places at both Intercounties and Cowdray
Thorn has also collected multiple Trial awards, over 25 additional test and team awards, and most significantly earned a place on the England Gundog Team alongside his handler. He is half-brother to FTCh Think Twice Zero to Hero, the only other golden retriever to represent England in recent years.
Fay now runs four golden retrievers and has proudly established her own Goldmyrtus kennel name, with her first litter arriving in 2026. Two of Thorn’s sons are already showing great promise in tests and trials, continuing the family’s success.
Balancing her dogs with a demanding London based career in Executive Education, Fay also consults for SMEs, organises training days at the excellent Petersfield Gundog Grounds in Hampshire, and manages Grovery Gundog Training for Nathan Laffy. She is a qualified NP judge and an active member of the SEGS committee.
Fay is quick to acknowledge the incredible support that has helped her reach this level. She credits Nathan Laffy’s mentorship, regular training with the Mayhews, and the guidance of Thorn’s breeder Laura Lazzaretto for giving her the tools to compete successfully.
“I know I have been very lucky,” says Fay, “to have Thorn by my side, but also to have been mentored by Nathan and to regularly train with people such as the Mayhews. I am beyond honoured to be part of this England squad with a golden retriever, standing alongside such legendary and experienced squad members. It’s a dream come true, and I’m very grateful that Captain Kevin has given Thorn and me this opportunity.”
Warm, determined, and deeply grateful for every part of the journey, Fay continues to enjoy every moment in the field with her beloved goldens.
