Scotland’s red deer are entering one of the most fascinating stages of the year. Across the Highlands, stags have now cast their old antlers and are growing a fresh new set covered in “velvet” — a soft layer of skin filled with blood vessels that helps nourish and grow the antlers at remarkable speed.

Antlers are one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom. After the rut in autumn, testosterone levels drop and the old antlers loosen and eventually fall away, usually during late winter or early spring. This natural cycle allows the stag to conserve energy through the harsher months before beginning the process all over again.

Right now, many stags at Kingairloch are in velvet, giving their antlers a rounded, furry appearance. Over the summer the antlers continue to harden and grow, preparing for the autumn rut when stags compete for dominance and breeding rights. Once fully grown, the velvet dries and is rubbed off against trees and rough ground to reveal the polished bone beneath.

It’s a brief but incredible seasonal transformation — and one of the best reminders of how closely Scotland’s wildlife follows the rhythms of nature 🦌🌿

Pier Cottage at Kingairloch is the kind of place you go to truly switch off. Set on Scotland’s remote west coast, it’s all sea views, quiet mornings, and that rare feeling of complete stillness.

Days move slower here, coffee by the loch, walks through wild landscapes, and evenings watching the sky fade into stars. Inside, it’s cosy and simple, with every window framing something worth pausing for. Sleeping 2 with a king sized bed an en-suite bathroom it is the perfect couples getaway.

It’s not just a stay, it’s a reset ✨
