Keeping Your Dog Safe in Hot Weather 🐶☀️

It's a hot day! It is up to us to help our dogs stay cool and comfortable. Dogs can overheat much more quickly than people, and heatstroke can become a life-threatening emergency.

💧 Top Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool:

✅ Always provide fresh, cool water.
✅ Walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day – early morning or late evening.
✅ Avoid hot pavements, which can burn paws. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their feet.
✅ Provide plenty of shade when outdoors.
✅ Use cooling mats, damp towels, or paddling pools to help lower body temperature.
✅ Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

🚨 Signs of Heatstroke to Watch For:

⚠️ Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
⚠️ Excessive drooling
⚠️ Bright red gums or tongue
⚠️ Weakness, lethargy, or confusion
⚠️ Vomiting or diarrhoea
⚠️ Collapse or seizures

🆘 What To Do If You Suspect Heatstroke:

1️⃣ Move your dog immediately to a cool, shaded area.
2️⃣ Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water.
3️⃣ Begin cooling with cool water on their body, particularly the tummy, paws, and neck.
4️⃣ Place them in front of a fan if possible.
5️⃣ Contact your veterinary practice immediately, even if your dog appears to improve.

Certain dogs are at higher risk, including flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs), elderly dogs, overweight dogs, and those with underlying health conditions.

If you're concerned about your pet during the hot weather, please don't hesitate to contact our team for advice on 028 4179 8574.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly! ☀️🐾
