🚨Signs of a hard day….

In our household it’s gifts 🎁

Pennywise brings me gifts when she’s had hard day.

🪧 What are the signs in your house??

I love my gifts and accept them readily and encourage a settle and a cuddle.

Today it was too warm for her to go running with Rigsy so she had to stay home 🥺

Today my gift was a bag of shiny beads ❤️

Don’t panic she had lots to do to keep her busy.

All of our dogs have ways to let us know that they might be having a harder day. This can be down to big events, little events or an accumulation of events.

If our dogs have a build up of stressors day to day without adequate outlet for decompression then this can cause an accumulation over time.

Whether you understand that as a “full bucket” “too many candles” “empty battery” or other analogies, they all explain how important it is that we allow our dogs time to reset, recover and relax if there have been any stressors across the day.

The same applies to the other end of the lead too…us humans need this decompression too, otherwise our buckets overflow, wild fire spreads or batteries die.

Things we can do to help our dogs:
✅ Look after ourselves
✅ Know what signs to look for if today has been a hard day
✅ Know what decompression activities really help empty that bucket, put out those candles and charge that battery
✅ Provide outlet that is appropriate and fulfilling
✅ Be ready to manage the next experience of these stressors

🙋‍♀️What do your dogs find challenging?

Rigsy finds rotational sounds very overstimulating. This is partly down to the way his breeding has affected the shape of his skull and his consequential perceptual abilities. The lawnmower can be a very stressful stimulus for him so we’ve been taking some time to do some training to help him feel more positive and relaxed when the mower is out, turned on and then also moving.

💡 Whenever there is a stimulus that your dog might be struggling with find a safe distance (one where they are relaxed enough to respond to cues and rewards) and start to build some positive associations and appropriate behaviours.

❌ Don’t accidentally end up flooding your dog. This is when they may over react or become very overstimulated first and then once they release there is now escape they stop reacting which is what we call inhibition. Unfortunately this won’t resolve the problem in the long term!

If you want to know more pop us a DM 🐕
