Great advice!

Dogs, like every other predator on the planet, are only interested in ‘the chase’ once something has gone past them and is moving in a direction away from them.

When something is running at them or towards them, they don’t know if they are the ‘prey’, however, when that animal has passed, and bear in mind that we are animals too, then the predatory instinct comes to the fore and the instinct to chase kicks in.

Do everyone a favour, including your puppy, and teach a solid sit-stay around moving objects and animals, and if you do come across horses or cows in a paddock, don’t take your puppy over to say hello, as you could end up teaching him that when he sees them off lead he’s supposed to run over and say hello… and then mayhem will ensue.

Had a great session today with some novice handlers initially working on steadiness, impulse control and walking to heel off lead.

Later we moved on to the stop combined with a retrieve then directional work using multiple dummies.

Note to self….must do better with the picture and video taking 🙄 I get so involved teaching I forget 🤷‍♀️

And honestly, I know people are doing their best. Life gets busy, routines are hard to change, and dog training can feel overwhelming at times.

But dogs don’t learn from our intentions.
They learn from consistency, repetition, and follow through.

You’re either reinforcing the behaviour you want… or accidentally rewarding the behaviour you don’t.

That’s why small daily actions matter so much.
Not perfection. Not being a “perfect owner.” Just showing up consistently for your dog

I welcomed a new group of lovely dogs and handlers to The Beginner Pet Gundog course this week.

There is always a little bit of apprehension from the owners when a new group comes together, I think they always worry that their dog will be the worst behaved, but they all settled in beautifully and we had a great time, working on loose lead walking, sit/stays, a short recall and an introduction to the whistle.
