Check out gorgeous young Livy, one of our Stage 1 Puppies grads who came up close with a deer in the woods. Her dad sent us this footage to show how all their efforts in training so far are paying off (shared with permission).

It’s really important to let young dogs observe their world, including wildlife, learn to disengage without prompting and be happy to ‘mooch’ about. Well done Team Livy - keep up your awesome efforts 🙌🐾

It’s officially summer, and yes, there’s a day for the T-shirt too!

The humble 'tee' has been around longer than many think. Before gaining mass appeal in 1904, it featured in an ad by the Cooper Underwear Company, proudly promoting a garment that needed “no safety pins, no needle, no thread, no buttons”. But it was Marlon Brando who really put the T-shirt on the map. After he wore one in the 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire, sales reportedly soared to around $180 million that year alone.

🛒 You’ll find 100% organic soft cotton tees for all the family at shophannegrice.com with prices from £13. Everything’s made to last, ethically made and sustainably sourced.

🎁 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀: From Friday 4th to Sunday 7th July (midnight UK time), I’m covering UK shipping. No code needed – check out as usual.

𝐒𝐲𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐚 & 𝐂𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐡’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲
When Sylvia, now in her 80s, welcomed young Ceilidh into her life, not everyone was supportive. Some questioned her decision. Others doubted whether she could manage a lively young dog. When a trainer told her to leave a class because Ceilidh couldn’t settle, Sylvia felt excluded and disheartened.

Ceilidh’s behaviour escalated. Sylvia couldn’t have visitors around, couldn’t walk her safely, and gradually withdrew from the social routines she once loved. Trips to the café, catch-ups with friends, even a simple walk, became overwhelming. But Sylvia didn’t give up.

Over the past year, we’ve worked together to rebuild trust, understanding and learn new alternative behaviours. Today, Ceilidh is walking calmly on lead, settling in public spaces, and has even joined Sylvia at Church. This means both Sylvia and Ceilidh’s quality of life has dramatically improved. This lovely dog-handler team are now regulars at Puppy & Dog School, making friends and thriving.

Ceilidh is still a young dog at 2.5 years, but the bond between the pair has transformed. When I first met them, the relationship was fractured. Now, it’s stronger than ever.

Whilst the learning never stops, Sylvia sent me this email, and generously shared her reflections (with permission). It’s been a privilege to be part of their journey.

Understanding, patience, kindness, consistency wins out. 🥰

One for my fellow history and science lovers!

"Once thought to be early domesticated dogs, the exceptionally preserved specimens found near the village of Tumat in 2011 and 2015 have been the subject of a new study, which has confirmed them as wild wolf sisters that lived during the Late Pleistocene. Remarkably, their stomachs still contained traces of their final meal, including meat from a juvenile woolly rhinoceros, and this has helped clarify aspects of Ice Age predator behaviour and diet."

As a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) user, I am particularly interested in this subject matter; however, something I had not considered nor discussed with my doctor was whether my HRT could impact others, including my animals.

It's estimated that there are around 13 million perimenopausal or menopausal women in the UK; that equates to around one-third of the entire female population. Some of the most common symptoms include vasomotor symptoms (e.g., hot flushes and night sweats), breast tenderness, insomnia, migraines, and/or premenstrual dysphoria (Deecher, 2007). With over 12 million dogs living as pets in 31% of UK households and around 11 million cats living in 26% of UK households (UK Pet Food, 2023), it follows that a proportion of these animals will be living with owners or carers who may be on HRT.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭: Read my article "Is hormone replacement therapy a risk to our pets?" https://www.veterinary-practice.com/article/is-hormone-replacement-therapy-a-risk-to-our-pets

Recently [2023], several stories have highlighted the risk of hormone replacement therapy being absorbed by pets
