A new article by DogRisk researcher Manal Hemida shows that puppies fed mostly ultra-processed kibble early in life have a higher risk of developing tartar as adults.

✨ But what is tartar?
Tartar (hammaskivi) is the hard, yellowish buildup that forms when soft plaque stays on the teeth and hardens. Once it becomes tartar, it can’t be brushed off — and it can lead to bad breath, gum inflammation, pain, and even tooth loss.

Texture, freshness, and chewing opportunities in puppyhood all play a role in lifelong dental health.

Connecting to this crucial point, and extending to the femur and pelvis, is a powerful muscle group known as the Psoas Muscle (Iliopsoas group). This group plays a vital role in movement, enabling hip flexion and assisting dogs with sprinting, climbing, and leaping.

Why They Matter Together:

You might notice heat over your dog’s anticlinal region or observe a more "roached" posture. These signs can indicate a shortening of the iliopsoas muscle, often due to postural changes.
