🚨 High Nematodirus Risk in Caithness🚨

The warm spring has triggered an early Nematodirus hatch, and Caithness is currently at VERY HIGH risk

🐑 Lambs aged 6–8 weeks are especially vulnerable—cases of acute nematodirosis have already been confirmed elsewhere in Scotland.
🌱 Fields grazed by young lambs last year are likely to carry the highest risk.
⚠️ Watch for sudden illness or scour in lambs. Deaths can occur rapidly.
💊 White drenches (BZ) remain effective, please contact us if you wish to discuss wormer choice with one of our vets

𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐰𝐞𝐬– Know the Cause, Protect the Future 🐑

Have you had empty ewes or aborted pregnancies this season?

The MSD FlockCheck Scheme offers a valuable opportunity to get to the root of the problem — by testing for the two most common infectious causes:
🦠 Toxoplasmosis and 🦠 Enzootic Abortion (EAE).

🩸Through a simple blood sample from barren or aborted ewes, we can help determine if either of these diseases is affecting your flock.🩸

✅ Eligibility: Open to farmers with 100 or more breeding ewes.
🗓️ Deadline: Sampling must be completed by 30th June.

Understanding the cause of abortion now means better prevention and planning for next season.

🐑Nematodirus Risk – Moderate Risk 🐑

We’re currently seeing a moderate risk of Nematodirus in our area. This primarily affects early born lambs, especially those grazing pasture used by lambs last spring.
Although the majority of lambs will not be grazing yet a sharp rise in temperature can trigger a mass hatching of eggs – so keep an eye on the weather and forecast on the SCOPS website below.

If you have any concerns or want advice on preventative treatments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the practice.
