πΏπΎ Every dog is different - understanding that difference is the key to a positive grooming experience πΎπΏ
After studies in dog behaviour and 17 years hands on experience grooming dogs I have learnt alot.
Each dog requires a uniquely tailored dog grooming experience.
For example;
Awkward/Aggressive dogs - 98% of the time there is a reason a dog doesn't like a certain area touching such as sore limbs (arthritis), sore ears, sore feet.
So when touching these areas to groom it can be uncomfortable or sometimes painful. The only way a dog can express it's discomfort or anxiety over these areas is by pulling away, resisiting, growling and even biting.
I will never push a dog past these comfort levels, I only ever work with what with the dog can tolerate.
Hyper dogs - having a giddy kipper dog can make a groom with sharp equipment challenging. So remaining nice and calm, gentle talking and soft movements along with simple commands, will keep the dog remaining calm but alert during its groom. When the groom is complete you can have the fun, giddy, exciting time the dog yearns for.
Puppies - It is essential to get a puppies first groom right, this carves the path for the future grooming life. Everything has to be super slow, make it fun, lots of praise, cuddles and kisses. The first ever groom isn't about getting hair off, its about the dog getting used to the sights and sounds of the salon, learning the process and mostly learning to trust the groomer.
Elderly dogs - when a dog gets to a certain age, they don't want to be messed around with. They want to be in and out the salon, back home having a cosy nap on the couch.
Elderly dogs are very delicate and I often do what I call a comfort groom. A nice slow bath and dry, then a fairly short no frills practical hair cut. This ensures the dog isn't stood up for any length of Time.
I could go on...
My number one priority is the dogs happiness and comfort whilst they are with me for a groom. I'm a 1 on 1 service. Creating a positive, happy grooming experience.
