It’s Burghley week! 🇬🇧🐴

Wishing all of the riders and horses the very best of luck for the week ahead and, most importantly, a safe competition.

A particularly big good luck to our very own Anthony Clark riding Fortune as they tackle their first Burghley together.

We’re so lucky to have Anthony as such a regular part of life at Harling Wood, and we’ll all be following every step and cheering them on.

Whatever the result, getting to Burghley is an incredible achievement in itself. Enjoy every minute of it Anthony & Fortune - we’ll be behind you all the way. 💙

AUTUMN RUGGING - WHAT SHOULD WE CONSIDER?

As we move into autumn it can be tempting to reach for the rugs early, but over-rugging can be as much of a problem as under-rugging.

A healthy horse with a good natural coat can often remain comfortable without a rug until temperatures fall below around 5°C, particularly if conditions are dry and they have access to adequate forage. Horses are generally much better equipped to deal with cold weather than we are.

Before deciding whether to rug, consider:

• Clipping – clipped horses have less natural insulation

• Age and condition – older or underweight horses may need more protection

• Breed/type – finer horses may feel the cold more than natives or good-doers

• Workload and management – horses in regular work may need different rugging to those living out with a full coat

• Forage intake – fibre digestion helps horses generate heat

• The actual weather – cold, wet and windy conditions can feel very different from a dry, still day at the same temperature

A few key reminders for autumn:

• Wet and windy conditions can feel much colder than a dry, still day at the same temperature

• Check under rugs every day for heat, dampness, rubbing or soreness

• Avoid over-rugging - horses need to be able to regulate their own temperature

• Good-quality forage is an important part of helping horses keep warm

• Remember that chilly mornings can quickly turn into much warmer afternoons

The aim is to keep the horse comfortable - not too cold, but equally not hot, sweaty or unable to regulate their own temperature.

The weather can change quickly at this time of year, so staying flexible is often the best approach.

The table is intended as a general guideline for rugging according to temperature, but every horse is different and the individual horse should always come first.

WINTER AT HARLING WOOD STUD ❄️🐴

Winter horse ownership doesn’t have to mean months of mud, dark evenings and horses spending days on end in their stables.

At Harling Wood, our facilities and ground make winter that little bit easier:

• NO MUD! – our light, free-draining soil means we stay remarkably dry through the winter months

• 365-day turnout – horses continue to enjoy daily turnout throughout the year, rather than being confined to their stables for days at a time

• Floodlit arena – our arena is fitted with top-of-the-range Litemyride floodlights, so training doesn’t stop when the evenings draw in

• Combi Ride Ltd Pro surface – professionally maintained to provide consistent going through winter, with excellent drainage and a surface designed to minimise flooding and freezing

• Indoor solarium and wash area – making
bathing, clipping and drying horses far easier when the weather turns

• Fully illuminated stable yards – excellent lighting throughout our stable blocks and yards, with no dark corners or poorly lit working areas

• Training throughout winter – clinics and training continue all year, helping horses and riders stay motivated and in work rather than having a long winter break

• Feed, bedding and hay on site – with The Feed Room at Harling Wood Stud right here, there’s no need to spend winter evenings driving around collecting supplies

• Treadmill facilities – another option for keeping horses moving and maintaining fitness when conditions aren’t ideal

• On-site weighbridge from Weighed In Ltd - helping owners monitor weight and condition throughout the winter months

• Secure facilities – CCTV, electric gates and nightly security checks give added peace of mind during the darker months

For us, good winter management is about allowing horses to keep as much of their normal routine as possible - plenty of turnout, consistent exercise, good footing and facilities that make caring for them easier whatever the weather.

Winter at Harling Wood is very much business as usual. 💙

We currently have 4 winter livery spaces available across our Silver, Gold, Platinum and All Inclusive Livery packages.

If you’re looking for a yard that makes winter easier for both you and your horse, get in touch to discuss which package would suit you best.

A little reminder that we have the amazing Piggy March back with us at Harling Wood Stud on Thursday 20th August 💚

Piggy’s clinics are always incredibly popular and it’s another brilliant opportunity to train with one of the very best, with sessions focused on dressage and show jumping and tailored to each horse and rider combination.

And there’s an added bonus this time…

Devoucoux will also be joining us for the day.

Piggy has been sponsored by Devoucoux for many years, and riders attending the clinic will have the opportunity to try their saddles, including riding their lesson in one if they wish. There will be both new and used saddles available, with a 30-day trial option on used saddles, Lydia Brinkley will be here able to check your current saddle.

For anyone who decides to purchase on the day, there will also be some extra benefits including a complimentary saddle pad and stirrup leathers.

So if you’ve been thinking about booking Piggy, this is a particularly good one to join us for. 🐴

Spaces are limited, so get in touch or book via My Riding Life:

BBK FLYNN – SUPREME HUNTER CHAMPION AT DUBLIN!

What a result. We were already delighted to see BBK Flynn crowned Heavyweight Champion at the Dublin Horse Show, but he’s gone one better and has now been named the 2026 Supreme Hunter Champion! 🇮🇪🏆

Flynn is the only offspring of our very own BBK Sumaya, making it particularly special for us to watch him dominate the Irish showing scene this year. His results have been phenomenal, and to finish Dublin as Supreme Champion is an incredible achievement.

We’re very proud of our long-standing relationship with the BBK horses, bred by David Mulholland and currently have BBK Sumaya, BBK Woltar and BBK Icarus here at Harling Wood, with BBK Apollo joining us when he’s ready to make the journey over.

Top-class Irish horses are a real passion of ours and Flynn is a fantastic example of the quality these bloodlines continue to produce.

Huge congratulations to David Mulholland, owner Debbie Harrod, rider Brian Murphy and everyone involved with this very special horse. What a season — and what a way to top it. 👏🇮🇪🏆
