Tendring District Council is reminding residents to take a few simple but important steps before using pet boarding, kennels, catteries or dog day care.

Always check the business is licensed by the council ✅
Visit the premises to see where your pet will stay 🔍
Ask questions about care, routines and staff 💬
Be cautious about paying in full upfront ⚠️
Don’t agree to pet collection unless you’re confident about the provider 🚫

These checks help make sure your pet is safe, well cared for and staying in a properly regulated environment.

The reminder comes after concerns about unlicensed operators offering services locally – including cases where pets have been taken to unknown locations without owners knowing where they are being kept.

Remember: some services, such as residential dog training or extended day care, may also require a licence if overnight stays or long hours are involved.
