On Sunday my 4th session was working with the delightful Hugo and his owner ๐Ÿพ
โ€‹
This adorable boy is one STRONG puller when he gets going, and can also be reactive towards some dogs. During our session we started by addressing his lead pulling, using a twin clip lead to help his owner manage his power more comfortably and safely. After showing them where the โ€˜Heelโ€™ position should be and how to teach it clearly, we moved on to the front door routine.
โ€‹
Usually, Hugo would sit, stay, wait to be releasedโ€ฆ and then launch out of the door at full speed ๐Ÿคฃ You could really see the anticipation building for the walk. So instead, we worked on impulse control, teaching him that the door opening doesnโ€™t automatically mean GO, and that calm behaviour gets him access to the walk.
โ€‹
Then came the walk itself. As you can imagine, Hugo LOVES food (not many Labradors donโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜…), so we used rewards to start building engagement on the driveway first. Every moment he chose to walk nicely beside us, he received praise and rewards.
โ€‹
However, Hugo had learned to grab the treat and then rush straight back ahead, so we started implementing direction changes to encourage him to focus on his owner rather than leading the walk himself. By the end of the session, both Hugo and his owner were doing brilliantly, and he was happily remaining by her side for much longer periods.
โ€‹
Weโ€™ve still got more work ahead of us, but this was a fantastic start, and Hugoโ€™s owner has already reported feeling far more confident ๐Ÿ’™

Session 3 on Sunday was with this adorable 18-week-old Labrador, Nala ๐Ÿ’›
โ€‹
As youโ€™d expect from a Lab puppy, this lovely girl is FULL of life ๐Ÿคฃ She loves to jump up, greet guests with excitement, ignore recalls when something more fun appears, and generally has far more energy than she knows what to do with.
โ€‹
Our first focus was mental stimulation. Because Nala is still so young, her walks need to stay fairly limited, but that doesnโ€™t mean her brain switches off on its own. We introduced my controlled retrieve game (perfect for a Labrador Retriever ๐Ÿ˜œ), alongside scatter feeding in the grass to encourage sniffing and natural calming behaviours.
โ€‹
Next up was the jumping. Her owners are now armed with clear steps to help tackle the behaviour, including only greeting when all 4 paws are on the floor. We also introduced place training for when guests visit, which will also be super useful for cafรฉ trips or pub outings in the future โ˜•๐Ÿพ
โ€‹
Lastly, we started building the foundations of recall, and Nala did amazing, even with Rosie (the young daughter) providing some brilliant real-life distractions throughout ๐Ÿ˜‚
โ€‹
Thereโ€™s still work to do, but this girl is one smart cookie and Iโ€™ve no doubt sheโ€™ll continue making amazing progressโ€ฆ especially with tasty treats involved ๐Ÿ–

๐Ÿพ IMAGINE IF YOUR DOG COULDโ€ฆ
โ€‹
โœ” Walk nicely on lead without dragging you down the street
โ€‹
โœ” Settle calmly while you enjoy a coffee with friends
โ€‹
โœ” Come back when called instead of pretending you donโ€™t exist
โ€‹
โœ” Pass people and dogs without turning every walk into an embarrassment
โ€‹
Thatโ€™s exactly what weโ€™ll be working towards in my brand-new Real-Life Skills for Dogs course.
โ€‹
This isnโ€™t about perfect competition obedience. Itโ€™s about creating a dog you can actually enjoy living with.
โ€‹
Over 4 weeks weโ€™ll focus on the skills that matter most in everyday life, helping you build a calmer, more responsive and more enjoyable companion.
โ€‹
To make sure every owner gets plenty of support, spaces will be extremely limited.

So my second session yesterday was the stunning Nova again ๐Ÿ’™
โ€‹
This lovely girl has been working hard on her lead walking skills, and yesterday we focused on building engagement out in the real world whilst using the environment as a reward.
โ€‹
Rather than fighting against distractions, we worked with them, allowing Nova to explore and interact with the world calmly whilst reinforcing check-ins and focus with her owners. When the environment became a little too exciting, we added in turns and changes of direction to help bring her attention back, which she responded to really well ๐Ÿ‘
โ€‹
What made me happiest though was seeing how well her owners handled everything too. Timing, consistency, patienceโ€ฆ theyโ€™re all growing in confidence together and itโ€™s making such a difference to Nova.
โ€‹
I also received this incredibly kind review from her owners yesterday:
โ€‹
โ€œChelsie has been an invaluable lifeline for us after we adopted our 10 month old staffy-cross Nova. We really want to set her up for success and seeing the progress sheโ€™s making under Chelsieโ€™s guidance is incredible.
โ€‹
We feel so comfortable asking for advice and she is always happy to give you thorough, easy to follow steps. I feel like she is training us humans just as much as Nova! Itโ€™s made our home so much calmer as Nova grows in confidence every day!โ€
โ€‹
Thank you so much for the trust youโ€™ve put in me with Nova ๐Ÿพ I cannot wait to continue watching her progress.

What a dayโ€ฆ FIVE 1-to-1 sessions back to back!! Safe to say I am completely exhausted ๐Ÿคฃ
โ€‹
But enough about me, let me introduce you to my first session: Marty (on the right), an adorable 8-month-old PUPPYโ€ฆ yes, puppy!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
โ€‹
Marty is such a sweet-natured boy, but when he spots another dog he makes sure they know heโ€™s there with a very loud bark because heโ€™s desperate to say hello and play. Although his intentions are friendly, his size and booming bark can come across quite intimidating to others.
โ€‹
Today we focused on impulse control, โ€œleave it,โ€ and helping Marty feel calmer around dogs through desensitisation work. We found the perfect cafรฉ spot with lots of dogs nearby to train around, and by the end of the session Marty was able to walk past another dog with no barking at all = massive win ๐Ÿ‘
โ€‹
Next step: working on calm greetings once heโ€™s feeling more relaxed around the dogs he passes.

At the weekend I had the pleasure of working with Ruby, a 4-year-old Staffie x Bulldog. ๐Ÿพ
โ€‹
Ruby finds walks quite challenging, becoming very fixated on dogs, runners, and children. When overwhelmed, she can begin whining and sometimes even shrieking. Although we didnโ€™t see any dogs during our session, it was very clear that Ruby is not comfortable outdoors at the moment. Her body stayed low, she constantly scanned the environment, lip licked, and never stopped to sniff - all signs that she was feeling anxious and simply trying to get the walk over with.
โ€‹
Because of this, we spent the majority of our session working in the home environment first. We started by creating a positive association with her harness and lead, helping Ruby feel safer and more relaxed before even thinking about heading out for a walk.
โ€‹
We also spent time helping her owner better understand Rubyโ€™s body language, learning to recognise the difference between when she is calm and comfortable versus anxious and overwhelmed.
โ€‹
Ruby absolutely loved working in the garden, so we used that as a safe space to build confidence and engagement. Finally, we worked around the front door with no pressure at all, simply short trips out and back in again, helping create a more positive association with the outside world.
โ€‹
We also introduced a โ€œLETโ€™S GOโ€ cue to help guide Ruby away from situations before she becomes too uncomfortable.
โ€‹
A lovely girl with an owner who is committed to helping her feel safer and more confident. ๐Ÿ’›

Following the fantastic success of the recent Dog Friendly Trail event held with Tamworth Borough Council, Iโ€™m excited to announce that the trails will now continue as a ๐—™๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—˜ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ for local dog owners and their dogs. ๐ŸŽ‰
โ€‹
After discussions with the council, Iโ€™ll be organising regular relaxed social trails through Tamworth Castle Grounds ending at the town to help bring together dog-loving owners, support local dog-friendly businesses, and create positive experiences for our dogs within the community.
โ€‹
๐Ÿ“… NEXT TRAIL DATE
Sunday 14th June
โฐ 9:30am
โ€‹
๐Ÿ“ Meeting Point
The Watchman Statue, Tamworth Castle Grounds
โ€‹
The walk itself will last around 20โ€“30 minutes and is designed to be calm, welcoming, and enjoyable for dogs and owners alike.
โ€‹
Perfect for:
๐Ÿถ Socialisation
๐Ÿถ Confidence building
๐Ÿถ Exploring dog-friendly Tamworth
๐Ÿถ Meeting fellow dog owners
โ€‹
After the trail, feel free to continue into town and support some of Tamworthโ€™s fantastic dog-friendly cafรฉs and businesses. Iโ€™ll also be around afterwards for anyone wanting to chat about training or behaviour advice.
โ€‹
This is a completely FREE community event and everyone is welcome.
โ€‹
Iโ€™m incredibly grateful for all the support shown after the first trail, and Iโ€™m excited to continue building something positive for the dogs and owners of Tamworth together โค๏ธ
