🎃👻 Halloween Safety at Wear Referrals 👻🎃

Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for families, but it can be a little spooky for our pets!

As the costumes come out and trick-or-treaters arrive, remember to keep an eye on your furry family members:
🐾 Keep chocolate and sweets well out of reach
🐾 Ensure costumes fit comfortably and don't restrict movement or breathing
🐾 Provide a quiet space for pets who may be nervous around visitors
🐾 Keep decorations, candles and electrical cables safely away from curious noses and paws
🐾 Make sure microchip details are up to date in case a pet is startled and escapes
Whether your pets are dressing up or hiding away from the ghosts and ghouls, we'd love to see them! 🎃🧡

🐾 Bandit and the case of the missing tail! 🐾

Bandit, who belongs to one of our neurology nurses, was referred after developing reduced appetite, low energy and vomiting. It was suspected he may have eaten part of his favourite soft toy 🧸👀

An ultrasound of his abdomen showed a moderately dilated stomach containing a well-defined structure consistent with foreign material.

🔍 Endoscopy was performed by our Internal medicine team to investigate and remove the object, and the culprit was finally revealed…

🧸 The missing tail from Bandit’s toy! 🐶

Thankfully, the tail was successfully removed without the need for more invasive surgery, and Bandit was soon back to his normal, happy self. ❤️

🐾 A Huge Thank You to Our Amazing Blood Donor Dogs! 🩸❤️

A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful dogs and their owners who joined us for our recent Pet Blood Bank UK donation session on Saturday 24th October.

We welcomed 15 incredible donor dogs and successfully collected 13 units of blood 👏

Thanks to your generosity, these donations could help save the lives of up to 52 dogs in need of emergency or life-saving treatment. What an incredible impact! ❤️

Every donation makes a difference, and we are so grateful to everyone who took the time to support this fantastic cause.

📅 Our next blood donor session is already scheduled for Saturday 19th December, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and first-time donor dogs.

🐾 Rory's Story: A Great Outcome 🐾

In February 2026, Rory was referred to our Soft Tissue Surgery team after blood was noted dripping from his p***s. Ultrasound examination identified a large 10-12cm abdominal mass.

Given Rory's travel history to France and previous insect bites, testing was performed to rule out leishmaniasis-related clotting disorders before surgery. He then underwent a paraprostatic cyst removal, splenectomy (to remove a splenic nodule), and castration with scrotal ablation.

We're delighted to report that Rory made an excellent recovery. 💙

At his recheck in September 2026, Rory showed no urinary abnormalities and no behavioural changes following castration. A follow-up ultrasound confirmed no recurrence of the cyst, meaning no further monitoring is required.

A fantastic result for a lovely patient, and we're thrilled to see Rory enjoying life once again. 🐾✨

🐾 Patient Success Story: Noodles 🐾

Noodles, an 8-year-old Sprocker Spaniel, was referred to our Soft Tissue team after a pancreatic mass was identified. The mass was diagnosed as an insulinoma, a tumour that causes the body to produce excessive insulin, leading to low blood sugar levels, seizures, and lethargy.

Following specialist surgery to remove the mass, Noodles made an excellent recovery. Her anti-seizure medication was gradually reduced and has now been completely stopped. Best of all, she has remained seizure-free since the tumour was removed!

We're delighted to see Noodles back to enjoying life and wish her many more happy adventures ahead. 💙🐾

🩸🐾 MEET ROO, OUR LITTLE LIFESAVER! 🐾🩸

When one of our patients needed an emergency blood transfusion, beautiful Roo stepped up and donated some of her blood to help save their life. ❤️

Roo was an absolute superstar throughout! 🐶💕 She was so brave and, of course, got ALL the treats afterwards for being such a good girl! 🥰🍖🐾 She definitely deserved every single one!

Blood donors are incredibly important in emergency veterinary medicine, and generous pets like Roo can make a huge difference when another patient needs urgent help.

🐾 Meet Denver, the guide dog with a hidden foreign body problem!🐾

Denver first presented in July with lameness affecting his right forelimb. Surgical exploration was performed at his primary care practice, followed by a second exploration in August.

Unfortunately, in September, the lameness returned in the same limb and digit, so Denver was referred to us here at Wear Referrals for further investigation.

🔎 On examination Denver had a mild right forelimb lameness at a walk, with a small sinus-like tract visible in the centre of the pad of digit 3. He was also painful on direct pressure over the pad and the underside of the digit.

📸 CT and ultrasound were carried out and revealed a larger foreign body connected to the sinus tract, alongside three smaller foreign bodies arranged in a line, with a fourth suspicious area.

🩺 The larger foreign body was removed through the sinus tract using digital pressure. An ultrasound-guided surgical approach was then used on the palmar aspect of digit 3 and the interdigital webbing, allowing removal of four small black foreign bodies.

And despite everything he’s been through, Denver remained the cutest guy throughout. 🥹🐶💙
