Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles
These show your legal rights, the rules surrounding the ONLY valid exemption for drivers and the rules around it. Also includes tips from not only the drivers, companies and guidence from the government but also tips and tricks from people ive spoken to.

Unfortunately i did not hear of any good companies so i would love if where ever you are, if you have a fab taxi company or driver who has always given amazing service to you travelling with your assistance dog, PLEASE link and give them a shout out in the comments and the area they cover for any other assistance dog handlers who perhaps live or are visiting your area. Trains part 2
This is tips from the train companies themselves or other assistance dog handlers who regularly use the trains to travel both short and long distances. There are even tips i would not have thought of such as where can your dog releive themselves is on a long journey, or swapping trains, issue surrounding luggage, and the pros (and some cons) of using passenger assist.

Ive included a quote of a client on the last page as i felt it was quite a good honest review from someone who travels alot by trains both long and short journeys with their assistance dog and what they have discovered. I have kept anonymous and removed dogs name so they cannot be identified.

Trains Part 1

To start with this is the law surrounding train travel and your rights you have as a passenger with an assistance dog. All train companies i looked at claim their own rules regarding assistance dog ar fully compliant with the Equality act 2010, and the behaviour asked for is something i would expect of an assistance dog as well to simply pass their access test if you do one anyways. So i beleive none of the rain lines ive looked at ask of anything unreasonable.

I also wanted to point out the assistance dog travel scheme created by national rail that could be useful to some passengers and my own experience of applying.

I will include a link below to uk train companies if you wish to check rules on a particular line. Im not sure if every single train company is listed but there are quite a few, and my be of use to some of you. Sometimes just knowing the companies policies can back you up if met with an un-informed member of staff as well.

This is some general information useful to know when travelling with an assistance dog. Firstly understand this part of the equality act. Some companies will say only ‘guide dogs/hearing dogs or only ADUK dogs, but the part of the equality act i posted that is important to note for those owner trained dogs is this highlighted part on 3rd page referencing any RECOGNISED medical condition that a dog helps with. HOWEVER the dog is still expected to act and behave by ADUK standards which can be veiwed on their site, or the law is no longer on your side. If the Assistance dog is a nuisance or in anyway disruptive to others, for example, then the law no longer covers you and the driver/company/staff CAN ask you to leave.

Secondly its important to know your rights surrounding allerigies or even phobias, and ive included where you legally stand with this. Ultimately a solution for both parties should be attempted but you cannot be asked to leave due to allergies or phobias of another passenger. Your disability rights are protected.

Tomorrow, will start off the week with a look at public transport, the laws, advice and even tips from other assistance dog users on how to make your travel by public transport easier.

Its taken a while to put together but theres alot of information, so each type of transport will have a different day, some needing 2 days so theres not to much information for people to absorb at once, and another day focusing on some more general information.

Follow up video to yesterdays with the pup taking the stairs much slower and safer for the handler, which is what we needed him to do. Plus to help him learn to slow it down and not get over excited by jumping ahead and guessing rather than watching and /or listening.
This was all done over 1 session as dog got the idea very quickly so i was able to move him on quicker too.

Some amazing training with this pup to help when using stairs with owner. We found that he wud try racing ahead so here we are teaching him to pause when owner pauses and popping to a cue as well incase need for anything else too later on.

I constantly forget to film the progress hen training these new tasks, but this is our latest one, being able to bring up a basket full of things that need taking upstairs. This was difficult for 2 reasons, firstly i had to find a basket where handle went long ways across to make it easier for dog to hold, and secondly anything like drinks or objects that rolls around can throw the balance off for dog. PLUS the dog has to learn to lift their head, yep even echo, my giraffe hybrid had to learn to lift her head up. The first few goes she spooked herself because the base of basket hit the step in front, so she learnt by herself she needed to lift her head.
In the video your see when she picks up basket she circles and resets herself as shes not yet confident enough to know she can just bring her head up straight off, she turns away and repositions before coming up and handing basket to me.

Be aware usually she walks up at same time carrying but for purpose of the video ive made her wait before coming.

So i noticed this year flossie wasnt getting into the bigger paddling pool, usually she goes in does her best hippo impression and creates tidal waves, She has to use steps to get into the car, on the sofa and bed now so i thought i wonder if shes struggling with her arthritis to jump in. Well this is 10 mins of after popping out the spare exercise step used for training. It made my heart melt to see her so happy to be back in her bigger pool. (I also now have 2 very soggy dogs)

As you can see i had set up the smaller plastic pool for her but noticed she wasnt standing in it completely and kept looking at the bigger pool of water. Just goes to show as our beloved dogs get older they may need that extra help to do their favourite thing again. Also how handy it is having the spare exercise steps i used to use when they were smaller and now back in use now their older.
