🐜 Flying Ant Day 2026 is coming — and Britain may see it earlier than usual.

Every summer, millions of winged ants suddenly appear across the UK. People call it “Flying Ant Day”, but it is not really one day. It is a short flying ant season triggered by the right weather conditions.

Warm air, humidity, recent rain and low wind can all help trigger the mass flight.

At Best Ants UK, our 2026 prediction is that the main swarm will likely peak between 20–25 July, with warmer urban areas possibly seeing activity earlier. A smaller second wave may follow around 2 August if the weather lines up.

The big flying ants are young queens. The smaller ones are males. They are not attacking you — they are taking part in a nuptial flight, a natural mating flight that helps new ant colonies begin.

Look out for:

✅ Temperatures above 23–24°C
✅ Humid weather
✅ Recent rain
✅ Low wind
✅ Winged ants suddenly appearing on patios, pavements and gardens

So when Flying Ant Day 2026 arrives, don’t panic. Stop for a minute and watch one of Britain’s most fascinating natural events.

🐜 "Have you ever heard of this happening?"
A customer messaged us this week: ants had nested under her potato plants and a young artichoke during the dry spell, and she'd carefully moved the nest to a bucket out of respect for the wildlife. Her fellow allotment holders had never seen it before.
Here's the lovely truth — those ants weren't harming her crops at all. Garden ants do very little direct damage to plants. What they actually do is aerate the soil, letting air, water and nutrients reach the roots. The Royal Horticultural Society even recommends tolerating them wherever possible because they're so good for garden biodiversity.
In dry weather, those raised, earthed-up potato ridges make a perfect warm, well-drained nesting spot. Once the rain returns, the ants usually move on by themselves. The only thing worth watching is aphids — ants "farm" them for honeydew — so keep the aphids down and the ants become nothing but helpful.
