Let’s talk about progesterone testing! Getting that timing just right is the best way to end up with a lovely team of puppies!

This lovely team who were in last week for their first vaccines and puppy checks before heading to new homes. We hope to see them all again! 💚

Anyway, back to progesterone testing. Here at Heartwood, we can run a simple blood test in our lab in 14 minutes! This is the perfect way to time that doggy date to perfection. 🐶 🐕

Did you know… that often people miss the early signs of ovulation and may end up being a bit late.

Pupdate!

Daphne is growing fast, keeping us on our toes and enjoying lots of new experiences in her first 4 months of life.

Socialising young puppies and kittens is the key to well balanced animals as they get older. Showing them new things so that they aren’t scared of the unknown later!

We also love puppies at Heartwood - do bring them in for a positive experience and to say hi to the team. 💚

🐾 Is your pet a healthy weight? You might be surprised! 🐾

Studies have shown that many owners don’t realise when their dog or cat is overweight. Because we see our pets every day, gradual weight gain can be easy to miss.

One of the best ways to assess your pet’s weight is using a Body Condition Score (BCS):

✅ Ideal (BCS 4-5/9)
• You can easily feel the ribs with a light covering of fat
• Your pet has a visible waist when viewed from above
• The tummy tucks up when viewed from the side

⚠️ Overweight (BCS 6-7/9)
• Ribs become harder to feel
• Waist is less obvious
• Fat deposits may be visible around the lower back and tail base

🚨 Obese (BCS 8-9/9)
• Ribs cannot be easily felt
• No visible waist
• Noticeable fat deposits around the body

Even a small amount of excess weight can increase the risk of arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and reduced quality of life.

Worried about a lump? Heartwood has a plan for your pet 💚

🍇 Did you know that when pet owners discover a lump on their pet, they often describe its size by comparing it to fruit – from a pea, to a grape, a satsuma or even an egg!!🥚 🍊🍎

Finding lumps early and keeping track of any changes in their size, shape, or appearance is one of the best ways to help keep your pet healthy. Early monitoring allows us to identify any lumps that may need further investigation and, if necessary, create the best treatment plan for your pet.

🐾 We offer Lump Mapping Appointments with our veterinary nurses!

During your appointment, our nurses will:
✔️ Record the location of each lump.
✔️ Measure and document its size and appearance.
✔️ Create a detailed map for future monitoring.
✔️ Seek advice from one of our vets if any lumps require further investigation.

Regular lump mapping provides an accurate record, making it much easier to spot changes over time.

Aand into June! This week is a small milestone as we finish our 6th month since opening Heartwood Vets.
