Ever had toothache? 🦷 Remember how it makes you feel? 😞

Dentals are one of the most effective ways to keep your pets feeling great.😊

Here is the lovely Jazz showing off her beautiful new smile after her dental procedure 🦷💕🐾💚

How to spot your pet may benefit from a dental? They may be:

- Eating more slowly or messily
- Licking their lips
- Going off their food or losing weight
- Bad breath
- Lower mood
- Chipped or broken teeth

🐾 Finishing off for Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month at Heartwood Vets👩🏼‍⚕️

🐾 Questions with Charlotte RVN FdSc BSc(Hons) CertAVN 🐾

Q: Why did you choose to become a veterinary nurse?

A: I chose to become an RVN so that I could be a voice for patients who don’t have one and be their advocate, ensuring they always receive the very best care. Our pets are cherished members of the family, and we treat them as if they were part of ours too 🥰

Q: What is your favourite part of nursing?

A: I love that no two days are ever the same! Veterinary nursing allows me to use such a wide range of skills every single day. One minute I’m an anaesthetist, the next I’m a radiographer, a phlebotomist, or supporting a patient through recovery — the variety is what makes the role so rewarding and exciting!

Q: If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

A: I think I’d be a terrapin 🐢

A slower-paced life spent basking in the sunshine and relaxing by the water sounds perfect to me!

Q: If you weren’t a veterinary nurse, what career would you choose?

A: I’ve honestly never really considered doing anything else! But if I had to choose another career, I think I’d enjoy being a solicitor. I’m passionate about advocating for those who need a voice, and I enjoy problem-solving, attention to detail, and helping people navigate challenging situations. It’s a career that shares many of the same values as veterinary nursing — compassion, trust, and always acting in the best interests of those you’re supporting ✨

Bespoke care at Heartwood Vets 💚

If your pet needs diagnostics or surgery that requires the next level of specialist veterinary action, we have an amazing network of visiting specialists.

Bringing in peripatetics or simply getting them on the phone is one of the ways that we can deliver great patient outcomes.

We believe that caring for your pet in a known environment, and having the Heartwood team the friendly faces along the journey is the best way to deliver high quality veterinary care at very competitive prices.

Here is Dr. Oli Gilman from avalon.vet, a soft tissue surgery specialist in theatre with our RVN Charlotte.

Bank holiday weekend reflections from Dr. Lucy 💚

This month always reminds me of my grandfather John Tandy, and this year is 4 years since he sadly passed.

The eagle eyed among you may have spotted this picture in my consulting room at Heartwood. Grandad was, and still is, my inspiration and compass for being part of the veterinary profession.

He showed me how pets are such a crucial part of people’s lives. Being part of this companionship connection, and being able to share special moments with people is what being a vet means.

I am so proud to be doing this at Heartwood Vets in our wonderful little part of Hampshire. Thank you to all of my wonderful clients and team for being part of the journey so far. Heartwood was never meant to be ‘just a vets’ and you are all proving this very true. 5 months in!

I hope that everyone is able to take a moment this weekend, enjoy the weather, and reflect on our special community.
Lucy

PS. Please don’t walk your dogs in the heat tomorrow!

🐾 Questions with Peyia SVN🐾

Peyia has been part of the team at Heartwood while she completes her studies at Sparsholt College (just down the road from us!).

Q: Why did you choose to become a veterinary nurse?

A: I always knew I wanted a career helping animals 🐶🐱 Being a veterinary nurse felt perfect for me because I love caring for animals, advocating for them, and giving them a voice when they can’t speak for themselves. Knowing I can make them feel safe, comfortable, and cared for during difficult times is the most rewarding part of the job 💙

Q: What is your favourite part of nursing?

A: My favourite parts of nursing are advocating for my patients, all things anaesthesia, and inpatient care 🩺🐾
I love monitoring patients closely, making sure they’re comfortable, and being there for them throughout their recovery. Building trust with both pets and their owners is something I really enjoy too.

Q: If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

A: I’d definitely be an elephant 🐘
Calm, caring, and protective, elephants are known for looking after one another. They’re gentle but compassionate, which is exactly how I’d like to think I care for my patients every day 💕

Q: If you weren’t a veterinary nurse, what career would you choose?

A: If I wasn’t a veterinary nurse, I’d love to own my own bakery 🧁
I’d spend my days baking sweet treats, drinking coffee, and creating a cosy space for people to read.

As well as providing excellent and expert care to our patients under our care. We also need to look after our staff and this mostly comes in the form of coffee and cake❤️

Did you know that our lovely receptionist Lorna is also an accomplished baker with a speciality in donuts!
