Duchess Pearl
2004-2025 💔

Pearl, our Shire horse, has been a favourite at Longdown since she arrived at the farm fourteen years ago. She was a gentle giant who just loved all the attention from our visitors as she leaned her 950kg body over the stable gates. Her party trick was to take the Longdown birthday hat off the birthday child in search of an Extra Strong Mint, which is fondly remembered by so many children and adults alike.
We acquired Pearl after she was put into an auction, when her previous owners realised that she was not able to continue her job pulling timber out of a forestry estate. We later found that she had a sleeping disorder, and despite numerous veterinary investigations and treatments, we were unable to find a solution for her problem.
Later, it became apparent that there was a tumour growing behind her eye, which was inoperable, so during the past year she has been monitored closely by our veterinary team and has enjoyed her retirement grazing in the field each night and returning to her stable during the day to meet our visitors. Unfortunately, to prevent her from suffering, we have had to make the difficult decision this week to say goodbye to Pearl. Jimmy and Chesney will miss their beloved equine friend, as will all the Longdown team and visitors.
RIP dear Pearl.

Longdown Farm Facts:

Goats make great pets they can be trained to walk on a lead just like dogs
Goats are browsers not grazers so they prefer to eat the bark of the trees rather than eat grass

Goats have one large stomach with four compartments

Goats do not have an upper set of teeth they have a fibrous pad instead which allows them to eat brambles and tear bark off trees.

We have a large selection of goats at Longdown some are bottle fed and others enjoy eating their food off plates.

Last time we asked you, you said you wanted more play for assisted needs and the end result was the wheelchair swing - so we're listening... 👂🏻
