A healthy guinea pig diet is simple when you break it down into a pyramid:

🌾 Base: Unlimited Hay
Hay keeps digestion moving and teeth worn down. It’s the most important part of their diet.

🥬 Middle: 1 Cup of Fresh Veggies Daily
Leafy greens and Vitamin‑C–rich veggies support immunity and overall health.

🥣 Top: Pellets & Treats (Very Small Amounts)
Pellets are a supplement, not a main food source. Treats should be occasional only.

A balanced diet = a healthy, energetic, piggy

The best time of the day to interact with your Guinea Pig 😊

You might be bonding with your guinea pig at the wrong time — and it’s more common than you think.
During the middle of the day, guinea pigs are often resting. Quiet, tucked away, and not very interested in interaction. It can feel like they’re shy or just not into spending time with you.
But then morning or evening rolls around and suddenly… zoomies, popcorning, exploring — a completely different vibe.
Same guinea pig. Different time of day.
Guinea pigs are naturally crepuscular, meaning they’re most active around dawn and dusk. That’s when they’re usually more curious, social, and open to interaction.
Work with their rhythm instead of against it, and bonding becomes much easier.

Handle with Care

Myth: “Guinea pigs can lay on their backs like other pets.”
Fact: Their spines are delicate and straight, they cannot bend or twist safely.

Guinea pigs have a unique skeletal structure. Their spine is long, straight, and not designed to arch backward. When flipped onto their back, their body weight presses against the spine and lungs, making it hard for them to breathe and potentially causing pain or injury. Even short moments in that position can lead to stress or panic.

When you hold your guinea pig, always keep their body level and supported. Place one hand under their chest and the other under their hindquarters. Hold them close to your body so they feel secure, never dangling or tilted backward. This upright position keeps their spine aligned and helps them feel safe.

If your guinea pig squirms, it’s not misbehavior... it’s instinct. They’re trying to protect their spine. Move slowly, speak softly, and give them time to settle.

Gentle handling builds trust and prevents injury.
Respect their anatomy, and they’ll learn to trust your hands.
