🎆🎃Most advice about dogs at this time of year is about survival. 🎃🎆
Close the curtains, hide the sweets, get through it.

But between Halloween tomorrow and Bonfire Night next Thursday, your dog is about to experience doorbells, knocking, people in strange outfits and decorations that weren’t there yesterday.

For a dog who’s coping, that’s not just something to get through. It’s a chance to practise real-life skills that are usually really hard to set up. You can’t book a dozen trick-or-treaters for a training session. This week, they turn up on their own!

We had a great special spooky scentwork club session this evening!

The dogs had a great time and there was some great challenges with all the decorations! And of course, there was some fancy dress 🤣

Thanks to all the club members who attended, we had a super fun evening!

And a massive thanks to The Great Ponton Village Centre for allowing us to use the hall while it was all decorated and ready for the weekends festivities and, as ever, for entrusting us with your venue!

“He’s reactive.”

We hear it all the time. Sometimes it’s the very first thing an owner tells us, before we’ve even learned their dog’s name.

For lots of people, finding that word is a relief. It explains the lunging, the barking and the walks that leave you shaking. It also connects you with other people who get it.

But somewhere along the way, for a lot of dogs, “reactive” stops being a description of a behaviour and starts becoming who they are.

And once it’s who they are, people stop expecting it to change.

Reactivity is a response. It has a reason behind it, whether that’s fear, frustration, overexcitement or a mix of all three. Those things can change, which means the behaviour can change too.

In our latest blog post, we talk about how the label can quietly hold dogs and owners back, what real progress actually looks like, and a few simple ways to start shifting it.
