I love working with Becky from DON DOG LTD, she’s always striving to learn and do her best for both her dogs and her students.

Her dogs are always a credit to that and I’m so privileged to be part of their learning journey ☺️

Most handlers focus on the command.

The best trainers focus on the state of mind before the command.

A dog that can regulate their emotions, think clearly, and remain calm is in the perfect position to learn, perform, and make good decisions.

Obedience isn’t just about teaching behaviours. It’s about developing the emotional stability that allows those behaviours to happen reliably.

Calmness isn’t the absence of drive.

It’s control of it.

🐾 Train the dog in front of you.
🧠 Build emotional regulation first.
🎯 Watch everything else improve.

This is success.

Not because the dog ignored another dog.
Not because they were perfectly obedient.

Because they made a calm, confident decision.

True progress isn’t always flashy. Sometimes it’s a German Shepherd choosing neutrality, staying engaged with their handler, and moving through the environment without conflict or concern.

This is what good training looks like:
✔ Calm decision making
✔ Emotional control
✔ Clear communication
✔ Trust in the handler

The small moments are often the biggest wins.

Everyone wants obedience.
But this matters more than commands.

A dog that can settle in a busy environment, process the world calmly, and make good decisions without constant input is showing real behavioural stability.

No over-management.
Just calm neutrality and engagement, while life happens around him - even with another dog working nearby.

That’s the kind of mindset we should value more in training. 🐾

Most people miss this part of their training.
And it’s rarely seen on the internet, because it’s not flashy or cool to watch!

No commands. No pressure. No overhandling.

Just two dogs choosing calm. Choosing to settle independently.

This is what we should be reinforcing more often - natural disengagement, emotional balance, and the ability to simply exist without constant assistance.

The ‘off switch’ is super important to our working breed dogs (not just the high octane Malinois etc, but our cockapoos, labs and other less ‘obvious’ ones too).

It doesn’t just ‘happen’ and they don’t just ‘grow out’ of being on the go constantly … we have to teach it and help them to settle initially. 🐾

Today we said goodbye to rMWD ‘Angry’ Sam,

Most of you knew him as the little ginger helper/Scentwork whirlwind, that used to pop out to help or trial then disappear again, but he was a truly special little dog.

Sam was a distinguished and award winning military working dog, recovering from serious injury in Afghanistan to return to full work and serve until retirement at 8 years old. From that point he was rehomed to his former handler, Scott (Jazz’s husband) and lived out his retirement turning his paw to everything from disk to Scentwork.

At the ripe old age of 16, he passed away today peacefully at home with his favourite humans around him.

He will always be remembered as the crazy little screaming spaniel who lit up our days and he’s truly missed by the whole team.

We appreciate your patience over the next few days while we take a little time to adjust and remember Sam.

Not sure if you’ve all noticed yet… but it’s HOT this week!! ☀️☀️

Your dogs welfare is our main priority, but we also understand that some dogs deal with the heat better than others, so even if it’s cooled slightly, if you have face to face sessions booked and you think it’ll be too warm, please contact us and rearrange!

Jazz will be extending sessions to early mornings and evenings (yes, we’re getting her out of bed early!) so we are able to offer same day but adjusted time (where availability allows)!

In the mean time, keep those doggy brains busy, be sensible in the heat and keep in touch with your coach for ideas of productive things to do in the warmer weather and most importantly, stay safe and enjoy ☺️

Warm weather + excited dogs can be a risky combo ☀️🐾
With this Bank Holiday weekend set to heat up, now’s the time to swap intense exercise for smarter enrichment and low-impact fun.

Things you can do with your dog when it’s hot👇
🧠 Scentwork and search games indoors
❄️ Enrichment game & toys
🌳 Early morning woodland walks
🐕‍🦺 Calm training sessions in the shade
🧩 Problem-solving games and duration work
🚗 Short trips to dog-friendly shaded spots
💤 And honestly… sometimes the best thing you can do is absolutely nothing.

Remember heatstroke can happen faster than most people realise, especially in driven, high-energy dogs that won’t naturally switch off.

Train the brain, protect the body, and enjoy the weekend safely 👌
