⭐ Meet the team ⭐

Holly is our fabulous Vet Tech! She compliments our services by offering freeze branding, disbudding, ROMS mobility scoring and much more on a regular or ad hoc basis. She is also currently in the process of becoming an ATT (approved tuberculin tester).

In her spare time Holly and her Fiancé run a small beef and sheep farm with help from the dog team Kit and Bruce who you may see in the office.

Feel free to ring into the office to have a quick chat with our Hol, to see if there’s anything she can help with on farm! ☎️

‼️Nematodirus‼️

We have started to make some early diagnosis’s of lamb deaths due to Nematodirus.

Nematodirus risk factors: 🪱
- Lambs at grass grazed by lambs the previous year
- Lambs 6-12 weeks old (that are starting to graze) most at risk but can be younger if ewe milk poor
- Nematodirus forecasts currently showing between moderate to very high risk (depending on location and altitude)

What else??
- Nematodirus causes high numbers of mortalities and stunted growth
- Treat with a white (BZ-1) drench ensuring a calibrated dosing gun, dosing to the heaviest weight
- It may be necessary to treat more than once

Lamb losses
- If you are experiencing any lamb losses we recommend bring them down to the surgery for post mortem examination. There are a number of factors that can cause lamb deaths, individual to a farm and management system. Ensuring a plan of action relevant to your system is key 🔑

❗️Liver Fluke❗️

- We are now seeing cases of fluke at post mortem
- We are recommending treating with a triclabendazole based product if they have not received one since mid December
- Flukicides have no residual action
- Please speak to a vet if you need further advice

14/01/2025

VAN numbers expire every 12 months so many farmers will soon be requiring a renewal. Be sure to check your expiry date and to speak to your vet when it’s time to renew. The annual health and welfare review is a way of getting a free vet visit which can help you qualify for the VAN. Once renewed, make sure to take your new VAN number to market with you.

‼️ Fluke update ‼️

- We have not found any evidence of fluke so far this season
- We have been actively surveilling lambs for fluke antibody with help from norbrook. A positive results indicates exposure 2-4 weeks ago. All our testing so far has come back negative.
- We have not seen any cases of deaths as a result of fluke and SRUC have not found any evidence of acute fluke in sheep submitted for post mortem
- Flukicides have no residual action, it is important to treat when fluke is active
- If you suspect fluke to be the cause of losses on farm please bring them down for post mortem
- Our vets are happy to discuss management specific to your holding, give them a ring!
