Last week we held a small meeting to discuss all things pre-weaning nutrition for dairy calves

There was a lot of interesting discussion, led by Ciara from Boehringer with consideration for where improvements could be made to improve nutrition in terms of both growth and rumen development:
▪️Feeding transition milk (depending on farm Johnes status)
▪️Fresh water provided from day one
▪️The benefits of short chopped barley straw
▪️Clean and fresh calf starter
▪️Group management and sizes
▪️Different types of calf milk replacer and how we can modify management to complement our CMR
▪️The value of monitoring growth rates

Big thanks to Holly for her big trip to M&S for lunchtime spoils, and Boehringer for paying 👀

We look forward to the next one!

BTV-3 in Numbers

3: The strain of bluetongue we are currently dealing with
10: The approximate incubation period in days of blue tongue. The time from infection until clinical signs.
28: The number of days after completion of a vaccine course until immunity
187: Number of confirmed cases of BTV-3 since 1st July. Note there is a 7-10 lag from report to confirmation and many cases are likely to remain unreported.
5,400: The number of doses of bluetongue vaccine we have received and allocated last week alone.
14,600: The number of doses of bluetongue vaccine on our wait list

If you would like to order vaccine please let us know as soon as possible. All 3 available vaccines are being imported in large numbers from across the EU and due across the next couple of weeks. The sooner you let us know you would want some the more likely we will be able to supply it.

A reminder that it is a legal requirement to support suspicion of blue tongue in your stock. Ring 03000 200 301 to report it.

Our vets are always happy to discuss and offer advice regarding vaccine, treatment and suspect signs in stock. Please give the office a ring 01756 700940.

Farm Animal Vet-Technician (12-Month Maternity Cover)

📍 Skipton, North Yorkshire

Craven Farm Vets are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and practical individual to join our farm practice team on a 12-month maternity cover contract.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about working with livestock and supporting farmers across the rural community. The ideal candidate will have previous livestock experience, a proactive attitude, and a genuine willingness to learn and develop their skills.

While experience as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Nurse is not essential, it would be considered an advantage. Additional qualifications such as Approved TB Tester (ATT), RoMS-accredited Mobility Scorer, or AMTRA SQP certification would also be desirable; however, we will provide full training and support.

The Role

Based at our independent farm practice at Skipton Auction Mart, you will play an important role in supporting the practice team, our farm clients and the wider rural community. This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are the same, combining practical livestock work with supporting the smooth running of a busy farm animal practice.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Disbudding calves
• Freeze branding
• Mobility scoring
• Supporting the development of a Calf Club initiative
• Assisting with veterinary procedures and operations
• Cleaning, sterilising and maintaining surgical equipment
• Supporting the office team with day-to-day administration
• Helping to maintain a clean, organised practice environment

Working Hours
• Approximately 30 hours per week
• Four-day week
• 8:30am – 5:00pm, with a lunch break
• 20 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
• Opportunities for additional hours by agreement, with some flexibility where possible

The successful applicant will:
• Be aged 18 or over
• Hold a full UK driving licence
• Have previous experience working with farm animals
• Enjoy working outdoors and as part of a team
• Be organised, reliable and willing to get stuck into a wide variety of tasks
• Be keen to learn and develop new skills

What We Offer
• Salary between £18,000–£26,000, depending on experience, qualifications and hours worked
• Full training and ongoing support
• Waterproofs, wellington boots and a uniform top provided
• Employer Pension contributions
• Health insurance
• The opportunity to work within a friendly, supportive team serving the farming community of the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas
