🌡️🐾 With the current heatwave, make sure to keep your pets safe.

Please remember:
💧 Provide plenty of fresh water
🌳 Ensure access to shade and cool areas
🚶 Walk dogs during cooler parts of the day
🚗 Never leave pets in cars – even for a few minutes

⚠️ Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse can all be signs of heat stroke.

If you are concerned your pet may be affected, contact your vet immediately. Early treatment can save lives.

🐢Meet Blaze the 8 year spur thighed tortoise🐢

👩‍⚕️Blaze belongs to our RVN Emma and recently pr*****ed his phallus and it became swollen and stuck out.

✂️This can lead to drying out and necrosis of the tissue so it's very important to get it replaced as soon as possible otherwise surgery can be needed.

🧽After trying a sugar water soak (which uses osmosis to try and shrink down the swollen tissue) it was decided that vet Ewen would place a purse string suture under local anaesthetic. This is a temporary suture that holds the cloacal opening closed to stop the tissue re prolapsing.

🩻X-rays were taken and a faecal sample examined to make sure there was no obvious reason for the prolapse. A high parasite burden, blockages and retained eggs are often causes behind this condition so these were ruled out. You can see Blaze is gently wrapped to a large flat surface to make sure we can comfortably get good x-rays without him running off the table!

🪨Although x-rays show a bit of grit, this can be normal for tortoises and should be easily passed.

🍀The suture will be removed and this should give the chance for the swelling to reduce, reducing the risk of re prolapse.

One of our recent patients was this pigeon, who was brought in to the clinic with a ruptured crop. Thanks to Vet John, the injury was successfully repaired and the little one is recovering well.

It is now in the expert hands of Columbines Wildlife Care to continue its recovery and rehabilitation before, hopefully, heading back out into the wild where it belongs. 🐦💙

🐰✨ A big well done to Ravioli, who recently visited us for his neutering surgery and microchip procedure.

He took everything in his stride and was a star patient from start to finish! ⭐ Here he is relaxing with nurse Kim and enjoying some extra TLC after his procedure. 💙

We hope Ravioli enjoys plenty of rest, treats, and fuss while he recovers, and we look forward to seeing him back to his usual self very soon.

🐾 Sprocket recently visited us for his 6-monthly health check. ❤️

It was lovely to see him looking so well, especially as he has recently celebrated his 1st birthday! 🎉🎂

We’ve loved watching Sprocket grow from a playful puppy into the handsome young dog he is today. He was a superstar during his health check and is doing brilliantly.

Rhio came in this morning to see Vet Ewen for her pregnancy scan, and we’re delighted to share that she has puppies on board! 🐾🩷

Mum-to-be Rhio was an absolute star throughout her visit and enjoyed plenty of fuss from the team. We can’t wait to hear all about the new arrivals in the weeks ahead.🐶✨

🚨CUTENESS ALERT!!!🚨
🌷This is Tulip! 🌷 Isn't she just the cutest!! 😍
Tulip recently came in for one of her monthly VIP puppy checks with vet Ewen who noticed that one of her baby canine teeth was growing out of line and had started to dig into the roof of her mouth.

Not only is this very painful (imagine a toothpick repeatedly jabbing the roof of your mouth) but can lock the jaw in place during sleep and lead to jaw deformities.

Tulip was booked in ASAP and had the offending tooth carefully removed by Ewen in a very delicate micro-surgical procedure taking great care not to damage the soon to emerge adult teeth below the gumline.

Pre- and post-op xrays were taken to determine the shape and position of the tooth and surrounding structures as well as to confirm that the entire tooth had been removed before waking her up from her anaesthetic.

We think Tulip is going to be much happier without that nasty tooth stabbing her repeatedly in the gums.
