🐾🎆 TOP TIPS FOR DOG OWNERS: FIREWORKS & DARKER EVENINGS! 🌙🐶
As the nights draw in and fireworks season approaches, it’s important to remember that this time of year can be stressful and frightening for our four-legged friends. ❤️
✨ HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE:
🏷️ KEEP MICROCHIP DETAILS UP TO DATE
Make sure your dog’s microchip is registered with your current contact details, including your phone number and address ❤️
🐕 CHECK COLLARS, ID TAGS & LEADS
Make sure your dog wears a properly fitted collar with an ID tag displaying your contact details. Check that collars, harnesses, clips and leads are secure and in good condition.
🚪KEEP GATES, DOORS & WINDOWS SECURE
A frightened dog can bolt in seconds, even if they would normally never dream of running away! Always double-check garden gates are shut, secure your fences and keep external doors closed when fireworks are going off. Don’t assume a familiar garden is automatically escape-proof! 🏡
🌙 BE EXTRA VISIBLE ON DARK WALKS
As the evenings get darker, help drivers and other pedestrians see you and your dog. Consider using reflective collars, high-visibility harnesses, LED collars or a clip-on light. Stick to familiar routes, keep your dog on a lead where appropriate and avoid poorly lit areas if possible. 🔦
🎆 PLAN WALKS AROUND FIREWORKS
Where possible, walk your dog during daylight and aim to have them safely back home before fireworks are expected. If you do need to go out after dark, keep walks short and choose quieter areas.
🏠 CREATE A SAFE SPACE AT HOME
Set up a cosy, quiet spot where your dog can retreat if they feel frightened. Close curtains to reduce flashes, put the TV or radio on at a comfortable volume, and provide their favourite blankets and toys. Let them hide or seek comfort if they need to. ❤️
🐾 WATCH FOR SIGNS OF STRESS
Panting, pacing, trembling, hiding, excessive barking or trying to escape can all be signs your dog is struggling. Stay calm, offer reassurance and let them choose where they feel safest.
🚗 NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED IN THE CAR
Dark evenings and colder weather can bring extra risks. Make sure your dog is safe, comfortable and supervised, and never leave them somewhere they could become frightened or escape.
💛 BE PATIENT, PREPARED & UNDERSTANDING
Every dog reacts differently. Some will snooze through fireworks, while others may need extra support. Never punish a dog for being frightened, and don’t force them to face something that scares them.
Our dogs rely on us to keep them safe, especially when the world feels a little louder and darker. Let’s make sure they’re protected, comfortable and cared for this fireworks season. 🐾❤️
