Bonfire Night: spare a thought for farm animals 🎆

Fireworks can be frightening for livestock, with sudden bangs and bright flashes causing animals to panic and potentially injure themselves.

If you’re planning a display, please let neighbouring farmers and livestock owners know in advance. A little notice gives them time to prepare and check their animals.

For those caring for livestock:

• Check fencing, gates and housing are secure.
• Keep routines familiar and provide access to their usual forage and fresh water.
• Where possible, monitor animals during nearby displays without putting yourself at risk.
• Check fields, yards and water troughs for firework debris before livestock have access.

When choosing a location for fireworks or a bonfire, keep well away from livestock, animal housing, hay, straw and feed stores.

A little consideration can help make Bonfire Night safer for the animals and people on our farms.

Drought-hit maize and changing feed prices: planning your winter feeding

This year’s heat and prolonged dry weather have affected maize yields and cob development, meaning the silage in your clamp may have a different feeding value than expected.

Regular forage analysis, careful clamp management and monitoring livestock performance can help keep rations balanced and reduce avoidable waste.

Meanwhile, changing soya sourcing requirements, global trade pressures and demand for alternative ingredients are adding uncertainty to feed prices.

September is here, and while there may still be plenty of grass about, it’s a good time to start thinking ahead to autumn and winter feeding. 🌾

As temperatures drop and grass growth begins to slow, keeping an eye on livestock condition and performance is important. Fields can still look green, but that doesn’t always mean grazing is providing everything animals need.

Now is a good time to:

• Check body condition and weights
• Look at the quality and quantity of forage available
• Consider forage analysis ahead of winter
• Introduce any additional feeds gradually
• Review energy, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements

Every farm and feeding system is different, so autumn feeding should be based on what your livestock need and what your forage is already providing.

Planning ahead now can make the transition into winter that little bit easier.

🌾 August on the Farm: A Challenging Summer for UK Livestock

August is bringing a difficult combination of pressures for livestock farmers, with bluetongue, prolonged dry weather and tighter forage supplies all influencing decisions on farm.

Bluetongue remains a key concern, particularly with the breeding season approaching, making vigilance, responsible livestock sourcing and keeping up to date with the latest Defra, APHA and veterinary guidance increasingly important.

Meanwhile, dry conditions are putting pressure on grass growth and, on some farms, bringing supplementary feeding forward and increasing demand on forage normally reserved for autumn and winter.

Now is a good time to assess forage stocks and quality, livestock condition and likely feed requirements. Earlier housing or changes to grazing could also affect nutritional needs as we head into autumn.

With weather and feed markets remaining uncertain, planning ahead can give farmers more flexibility to respond to changing conditions.
