We’re delighted to share a very special milestone in our journey... the first animal arrivals since the start of our site development, marking the beginning of many exciting changes to come across the zoo!🎋

Please join us in welcoming four wonderful greater rheas - Sam, Speedy, Jess and Snowy 🐤🌾Two males and two females, who arrived last week from All Things Wild.

After settling in, they’re now exploring their new home in our South American Pampa habitat, opposite the giraffes 🦒 They’ve already been spotted confidently roaming across the hill, it’s truly fantastic to see this space brought back to life after being empty for so long.

This is just the start and a glimpse of the exciting transformation ahead as our Grasslands zone continues to develop🌱✨

☀️ Make the most of the sunny bank holiday weekend and come meet our new arrivals for yourself!

Join us in wishing Wousan a very Happy 18th Birthday! 🦧🎉

To mark the occasion, our keepers put together a very special birthday treat, a refreshing cake made from ice, packed with delicious fruit and peas (a firm favourite!). 🥭🧊 Alongside that, there were plenty of presents to unwrap, keeping Wousan and the rest of the orang family entertained throughout his big day🎁

Of course, no party is complete without a little mischief… our cheeky youngsters Natty and Ranbi were straight in there, convinced the celebration was all about them! 😄 They did their best to get involved, but Wousan still managed to enjoy his well-earned treats and presents 🎂

🌍🖤 Happy World Binturong Day! 🖤🌍

Today we’re celebrating one of the zoo’s most loveable and mysterious residents – the binturong – and our very own pair, Fig and Carlo🖤

Often called bearcats (though they’re neither bears nor cats!), binturongs are truly unique. Native to the forests of Southeast Asia, they spend much of their lives in the treetops, using their incredibly strong prehensile tails like an extra limb to climb and balance. They’re one of the few mammals in the world to have this amazing adaptation!

One of the most surprising facts about binturongs? They famously smell like buttered popcorn🍿 thanks to a special chemical in their scent glands, which they use to mark their territory as they move through the forest.

Despite their charm, binturongs are classed as Vulnerable in the wild, with populations declining due to habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade. Days like today are important moments to shine a spotlight on lesser-known species and why protecting them – and their forest homes – matters.

Whether Fig and Carlo are snoozing inside, exploring their enclosure, or charming keepers and visitors alike, they’re fantastic ambassadors for their species. We’re incredibly proud to care for them here at Paignton Zoo.

💬 Drop a 🖤 in the comments to show Fig and Carlo some World Binturong Day love!
