What is a comfort groom?🐾

A comfort groom is a grooming approach where your dog's wellbeing comes first. During a comfort groom, I work at the dog's pace. That might mean allowing them to lie down for much of the groom, taking extra breaks, adjusting how I handle them, or adapting the style to keep them comfortable. The goal is for your dog to have a positive, stress-free experience while still receiving the care they need.

Alfie is a great example of this❤️

I had the pleasure of grooming Alfie recently. He is a senior rescue dog with three legs. As he's gotten older, his balance has become more difficult, and his sight and hearing are now very limited. Grooming can be tiring for him, so throughout his appointment he spent most of his time lying down, allowing me to work around him in a way that kept him comfortable and supported.

Every dog deserves to be treated as an individual, and sometimes the kindest thing I can do is adapt the groom to suit their needs, rather than expecting them to fit a standard grooming process.

Dogs like Alfie remind me that grooming isn't just about how a dog looks when they leave. It's about supporting their wellbeing, respecting their limitations, and making the experience a positive one, no matter their age or ability. Their comfort, dignity, and quality of life will always be more important than achieving a perfect haircut🤍

This spicy little gentleman is Alfie, a 12.5 year old Fox Terrier X Jack Russell🌶

In his old age, Alfie has become reactive to certain parts of grooming and came into the salon muzzled for both of our safety. The muzzle remained on for the entirety of the groom until his owner came back to collect him, and then he got some treats!🍪🐾

As he was muzzled for grooming and is aggressive for clipping around his face, I chose to remove what hair I could with scissors, which he tolerated really well! His owner was chuffed with how he went home, as she didn't think he would allow me to groom his face at all🤗

This is a reminder to work WITH the dog in front of you. No two dogs are the same, and as dogs age their tolerance for grooming can decrease, and that's okay! I will always strive to make the dog look as best as I can, but ultimately their safety and health is the most important thing!🗝💜

If you are walking a dog tomorrow or over the next few days - go out in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. DO NOT walk a dog during the hottest parts of the day.

Don’t run or cycle with your dog when it’s hot.

DO NOT leave them in the car or tied up in the heat!

Pavements can get very hot! You know the saying, "it's hot enough to fry an egg!" Imagine what that does to your poor dogs' feet! If the ground is too hot to touch with your hand for five seconds, it’s too hot for paws!

Nooking is a self-soothing behaviour where a dog sucks on or gently chews soft objects like blankets, pillows, or plush toys, often while kneading them with their paws. It is a comforting habit that helps them relax, reduce anxiety, or settle down before falling asleep. Nooking is the canine equivalent of a baby sucking their thumb or using a pacifier🥹

This happened during one of my recent grooms and I had to capture the moment!🥹 Little Mollie is just 5 months old and was in for her first full groom. This sleepy baby was nibbling at my thumb while I scissored around her face, next thing she was suckling and started to drift off to sleep😭❤️
