๐Ÿฉท Mavis - Akita x Rottweiler, roughly one year old, lovely girl, but strong and bouncy due to her breed and age

๐Ÿ’™ Teddy - Poodle Cross, roughly 1-2 years old, neutered, reactive but in an excited way, he wants to say hello to everyone!

With the temperature set to reach 32 degrees today, our pets are at high risk of developing heat stroke (which can be fatal), if not appropriately cared for. Check out the infographics below for ways on how to help keep cats and dogs cool! โ„๏ธ

Hot Forecast Due ๐ŸŒ… Met Office Heat will build through the week. On Wednesday the highest temperatures values in the UK are expected to be around 27ยบC.

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

๐Ÿ’งGet someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
๐Ÿ’งPour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
๐Ÿ’งNB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
๐Ÿ’งDo not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
๐Ÿ’งMove to a cool, shaded area
๐Ÿ’งPrepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

๐ŸŒ…International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
๐ŸŒ…Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
๐ŸŒ…Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
๐ŸŒ…No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with coldโ€water immersion.
๐ŸŒ…Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
๐ŸŒ…Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Meet Nala, who is a great fighter and made an amazing recovery when she had emergency surgery back in February. Nala came to us referred from another Veterinary practice as unfortunately Nala's complex illness made her condition very challenging to manage.

When Nala arrived at Catmose she had been having haemorrhagic gastroenteritis for a few days and had developed a twisted stomach on the day (known in the veterinary world as gastric dilation volvulus or GDV). Nala received urgent care to stabilise her for surgery and the tests needed to manage her condition were quickly performed as she was getting ready to go into theatre for emergency surgery.

As surgery started the latest results came back showing that Nala's blood was taking longer to clot, she had anaemia and her blood had very little white blood cells left, her sugar levels were low, as were her protein levels, however, the potassium in her blood had started to raise (the findings in the tests and during surgery were suggestive of Nala having sepsis on top of her previous problems).

During surgery liquid containing blood was removed from her stomach and a big mass om the liver was identified, the surgery to put her stomach back in its normal place and fix it there was performed quickly and a sample of the liver mass was also taken before finishing surgery and waking Nala up.

Nala spent the night with us recovering and eventually went back to her family; being a Weimaraner, Nala was very excited and active when she saw us a few weeks after surgery like nothing had happened, and to add to the good news of her being fully recovered, the mass in her liver turned out to be benign.
