Losing one of our rabbits is always hard. Losing any pet or animal is heartbreaking, but for me, the hardest part is watching another rabbit grieve the loss of their best friend and companion. Right now I am going through this with Cookie who lost Poppy 💔
When a rabbit loses a bonded friend, you're not only grieving the rabbit you've lost - you're also watching the surviving rabbit try to make sense of a sudden absence. Rabbits form incredibly strong bonds, spending their days together for comfort, grooming, sleeping, and security. Seeing one search for their friend, sit alone where they used to cuddle, or become quieter than usual can be truly heartbreaking.
Many people expect the loss itself to be the hardest part, but watching the rabbit left behind grieve can be just as painful. You can often see the change in their behaviour, and it reminds you just how deep their bond was.
While we're grieving our loss, they're grieving theirs too. Their companionship isn't something we imagine - it's very real, and when one is gone, the absence is felt by both the rabbit left behind and the people who loved them. 💔🐇🐇🌈
