🐴✨ Beat Sweet Itch Before It Begins! ✨🐴

Sweet itch can make spring and summer miserable for our horses but prevention works best when it starts before the midges arrive. That’s why January/February is the ideal time to book the sweet itch vaccine!

The sweet itch vaccine can reduce sweet itch symptoms in some horses when given before the season starts. It’s usually given as two doses 14 days apart ahead of midge season.

The outcome of the vaccine varies from horse to horse however many owners report reduced itching and sores. It is important to note not every horse responds the same but vaccination before the midges are active gives the best chance of positive results.

The vaccination should be used in combination with usual fly management including fly rugs, repellents, avoiding turnout at dusk and dawn, avoiding turnout near stagnant water (ideally on a windy hill!), muck heap management and maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

✨ Let’s help every horse enjoy spring itch-free and happy! 🌼

Have you been getting our monthly equine newsletters? In the latest edition, we started introducing all of our dedicated equine vets...have you met Laura?!

Laura is originally from Surrey and moved to Devon after graduating from the Royal Veterinary College. During her degree she spent an extra year studying animal behaviour and welfare at Bristol University, which sparked her interest for equine behaviour and how this can allow us to better understand our horses’ health and welfare. Before joining South Moor, Laura spent time with various charities overseas helping working horses and donkeys. Seeing so many very poorly animals in these situations began her interest in internal medicine, which she has continued to develop while working with the South Moor team.

After a few years of hard work, Laura passed the exam for a post-graduate certificate in equine medicine, which is a huge achievement. Laura has two of her own horses – one of which, 3-year old Ash, some of you may have spotted being very brave for his first strangles vaccination in our last newsletter! Aside from bringing on her youngster, Laura enjoys eventing her older and somewhat more sensible horse, Bear, and walking on the moors with her two dogs Monty and Tinker, who you will often find snoozing in the back of her truck! Outside of the horse world, Laura and her other half Phil love to travel, especially to mountainous places where they can hike and camp (and where non-horsey Phil can escape from horse duties for a short while!).

We’re always pleased to see our friendly local EDTs on our rounds. Look, Keith breaking his rule of no tinies here for 29yo Maisie! Although all our equine vets do teeth, we are always happy to assist with sedation or anything else for EDTs (Equine Dental Technicians), but only if they are fully qualified and on the BAEDT list, which you can check here: https://www.baedt.com/members/ . Make sure your horse gets the best and use a BAEDT member or an equine vet for your horse dentals.

James might look like something out of Star Wars here, but he is actually wearing ‘loupes’. These are magnifying surgical optics. They allow enhanced visualisation and increased precision, usually during surgery. We don’t need these very often on equine, but they are extremely useful when we do!
