All grooming is carried out with the pet’s comfort and welfare as the priority. Grooms may be adjusted, paused or stopped if continuing would cause stress, pain, or risk to the pet or groomer. Coat condition, behaviour, age and health may affect the final finish.

🧡 What do you do when your dog’s ears always end up in their dinner? 🧡

Dinner time in our house comes with one small problem...what to do about The ears. Every time, they manage to make their way into the food bowl before he does.😂

So the solution is out comes the scrunchie, up go the ears, and we have a very practical little dinner-time updo. Problem solved.

Admittedly, he now looks less like a boy and more like he’s about to join an 80s girl band…but his ears stay clean😁

🧡 Dog Friendly Day calls for a celebration of some of our favourite local spots...🧡

One of the things I love most about having dogs is that they encourage us to get out and explore places we might never have discovered otherwise.

We’re lucky to have some fantastic dog-friendly places right here in North Yorkshire, and these are a few of our favourites:

🐾 North Yorkshire Water Park
A great place for a walk, with plenty of space to explore and lots of opportunities for adventure. Even better, there’s a dog-friendly café on site for that essential coffee stop afterwards.

🐾 Dalby Forest
One of our favourite places for a wander. Whether you're looking for a gentle stroll or a longer hike, there are so many trails to choose from. It's a wonderful place to spend a few hours with your dog, and there's dog-friendly cafés there too.

🐾 Hunmanby Gap Beach
Perfect for dogs who love the sand, sea and fresh air. There’s something special about watching dogs race along the beach with their ears flapping in the wind! And yes, there are dog-friendly café options nearby for a well-earned drink afterwards. What's not to love.

For me, the perfect dog-friendly day always includes three things:

🧡 The cat owners I really want to help… 🧡

Are the ones who have been putting off getting their cat groomed because they’re worried their cat won’t cope, will become stressed, or simply won’t tolerate being handled by someone else.

Their cat may have matting, and they may be at the point where they don’t know what the best thing to do is.

It could also be that they didn’t even realise cat grooming was a thing, so they have been trying to manage grooming their cat at home.

If that sounds like you, please don’t feel embarrassed. I am here to help you and your cat.

I want cat owners to feel able to have a conversation with me about their cat and the best way forward, without feeling bad.

Working with me is about helping cats feel more comfortable, supporting their coat health, and finding the best way forward for the cat in front of me.

🧡 Why clients choose to work with me 🧡

I don’t treat grooming as a quick wash, dry and trim.

I treat it as a relationship built on trust and skill. The first thing I do with any dog is build trust, without trust, grooming becomes much harder.

A dog who feels scared, unsure or overwhelmed is far less likely to enjoy grooming. This is where my approach may not be for everyone.

If you see your dog as “just a dog” and simply want them groomed as quickly as possible, I’m probably not the groomer for you.

That isn’t how I see them. Every dog is an individual.

Your dog may be perfectly happy at home, but a grooming salon is a very different environment. New sounds, new smells, different tools, handling, dryers, clippers, scissors… and they don’t understand why it’s all happening.

That’s why I take time to get to know them.
I learn what they enjoy. I notice what they dislike. I work out where they need more support. I adapt the groom to the dog in front of me.

Many of the dogs I groom are excited to come and see me, often dragging their owners up the drive because they know I listen, I don’t rush them, and I don’t force them through a groom.

This isn’t only about comfort. It’s also about skill and doing the best job for your dog.
Every groom is tailored to their coat, shape, lifestyle, behaviour, comfort levels and what is realistic for you to maintain at home.

My approach is built on:

You may have seen my post the other week showing before and after pictures of a beautiful Coton de Tulear who came to me for the first time. His owner wanted him kept natural and true to his breed, rather than styled with a rounded “Bichon” type finish.

After his groom, I received this lovely feedback:

🧡 One dog taught me something I’ll never forget… 🧡

When Waffle first came to me, he cowered in the corner of the salon. If I moved towards him, he growled. I knew there was no point trying to groom him. So I didn’t.

I let him stay where he felt safest.

I moved away from him, gave him space, and gently tried to encourage him to come to me. He wasn’t ready, so I didn’t push it.

Instead, we arranged a few short sessions where the only goal was for Waffle to get used to me, the salon, and the idea that nothing bad was going to happen. Eventually, over time, he started to trust me.

He came closer, then he allowed me to touch him. Eventually, we began grooming.

I won’t pretend this was quick, because it wasn’t.

Thankfully, Waffle had a caring owner who understood that he needed time, patience, and a different approach. Without that, I believe his behaviour could have escalated.

If he had been restrained and forced through a groom before he was ready, his fear would likely have grown stronger and his behaviour could have become worse.

But he was given time and was listened to. We built trust and that has paid off as now Waffle allows me to do a full groom and he even gives kisses.

Over time, I’ve learned his likes, his dislikes, and the little things that help him feel safer. If he tells me something is too much, I stop. I change what I’m doing. I swap to something I know he can cope with.

Waffle taught me that with anxious dogs, less is more. That trust has to come before grooming. That you have to go with what each dog needs at that time.

🧡 Cat grooming is finally coming to Vanity Fur VIP 🧡

I’m so excited to officially say that my cat grooming training is happening very soon and I honestly can’t wait to get started properly.

This is for cat owners who…
👉 struggle with matting or knots
👉 worry about stressing their cat out
👉 have older cats who are struggling to groom themselves properly
👉 have long-haired cats needing regular maintenance
👉 want a calmer, quieter one-to-one grooming experience for their cat

Just like with my dog grooming, my goal is to create a calm, gentle environment where grooming is approached with patience, understanding, and your cat’s wellbeing in mind.

I know how sensitive cats can be, which is why creating a low-stress experience is so important to me.

Cat grooming will be launching around June/July and I’m incredibly excited for this next step for Vanity Fur VIP.

🧡 One thing I wish cat owners knew… 🧡

A common myth about cats is that they don’t need grooming this applies to both short haired and long haired cats.

Cats are so good at keeping themselves clean that it’s easy to assume they’ll always manage it on their own. But as cats age, stiffness, arthritis, or weight changes can make grooming and even basic maintenance much harder. They may still try to groom, but it’s not quite the same. Movements become a little stiffer, certain areas get harder to reach.

That’s when you may start to see:
👉 matting and coat changes
👉 a greasy or clumped coat
👉 a change in smell
👉 dry, flaky skin
👉 hygiene issues (including faeces or urine in the coat)
👉 parasites like fleas being missed
👉 reduced scratching on cat posts, leading to overgrown nails and nails starting to curl into the pads

✨ Why this happens?
Grooming and scratching both rely on movement and flexibility. When that becomes uncomfortable, cats do less of both.

This is often the point where owners start to step in trying to help, but finding their cat won’t tolerate it, or worrying about making them uncomfortable.

🧡 A little before-and-after from my work...his first visit🧡

This little Coton de Tulear came in for his first groom with me, and his owner said something straight away that set the tone…“Please don’t make him look like a Bichon.”

And honestly that matters more than people realise. When he arrived, his coat was exactly what you’d expect for his breed soft, light, that slightly cotton-wool texture that looks beautiful and fluffy but can tangle so easily if it’s not handled properly.

There were a few tangles to work through first nothing major, just enough that they needed to be taken out carefully before moving on.

He was such a good boy throughout the groom. The only part he wasn’t keen on was the noisy dryer. So I switched to a quieter dryer instead and carried on in a way he was comfortable with. Sometimes it’s those small adjustments that make the biggest difference. Once the coat was fully prepped, I could move on to the salon trim.

And this is where it’s easy to get it wrong with this breed because if you over-shape or round the head too much, you lose that natural look and suddenly they resemble something completely different. So I kept everything in balance with his coat type:

✨ soft, flowing finish
✨ natural shape
✨ tidy, but not overdone

By the time he left, he didn’t look transformed into something else. He just looked like a well-groomed Coton de Tulear, which is exactly what his owner wanted. He was such a lovely boy to work with from start to finish.
