ā˜€ļø A reminder that your pet's welfare will always come before my diary. ā˜€ļø

Due to the high temperatures, I have been making some adjustments to help keep your pets safe and comfortable during their grooming appointments.

This means appointments may be:

āœ”ļø Moved to earlier in the morning
āœ”ļø Shortened where appropriate
āœ”ļø Rescheduled to a cooler day if needed

Your pet's safety and wellbeing will always come first.

āž”ļøWhen bringing your pet to the salon:
Please transport your pet to the salon in an air-conditioned vehicle where possible. I would kindly ask that dogs are not walked to the salon in this heat, as even short walks can increase the risk of overheating and heatstroke before their appointment has even begun.

Heatstroke can develop quickly and is a medical emergency, so it's important that we all take extra precautions during periods of hot weather.

If your appointment is affected, I will contact you directly. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

🧔 One dog grooming myth I wish more people knew the truth about... 🧔

"A dog that stands still for grooming is coping well."

At first glance, it makes sense. If a dog isn't moving around, barking, growling, or trying to get away, they must be fine... right? But this isn't always the case.

Some dogs do feel relaxed during grooming. But others cope by freezing. They become so overwhelmed that they don't know what else to do. They literally "shut down".

That's why I don't just look at whether a dog is standing nicely on the table. I pay attention to the whole dog. A dog doesn't have to be fighting to be struggling.

Behaviour-led grooming means looking beyond obedience and asking, "How is this dog actually feeling right now?" Dog grooming isn't just about giving your dog a haircut.

Sometimes that means slowing down, changing the plan, giving breaks, or ending on a positive note rather than pushing through to get everything finished.

For me, a successful groom isn't just about how your dog looks when they leave the salon. It's also about how they felt while they were here.

Have you heard this myth before? Would you like more myth-busting posts like this? Let me know in the comments. 🐾

🧔 Quick Tip for today 🧔

If your dog licks their lips or turns their head away while you’re brushing that’s your sign to stop. Not later. Not after one more go, stop right then. That’s often the first sign of discomfort long before growling, pulling away, refusing to stand or the bite.

Your dog isn't being awkward, your dog is just trying to let you know the only way it knows that it doesn't feel right.

This is where it usually goes wrong…
Most people carry on, thinking they just need to get through it, or that their dog needs to get used to it and put up with it.

But from your dog’s point of view? That’s when trust starts to break down.

šŸ‘‰ Your dog starts to think they're not listening to me and soon your dog's behaviour escalates to the point where it can lead to a bite.

šŸ‘‰However, if you pause, do shorter sessions, and go gently you start to build trust instead

This is exactly why some dogs end up hating being brushed not because of the brush itself, but because they weren’t listened to early on.

šŸ“Œ Save this for later

🧔 This might not look exciting, but I love it 🧔

Ever wondered why some grooms still look good weeks later and others don’t? It often comes down to how the finish is created.

A well-finished groom should:
✨ grow out evenly
✨ hold its shape for longer
✨ be easier for you to maintain at home
✨ and still look good between appointments

That’s the difference most people notice even if they’re not sure why.

Most people assume grooming is mainly done with clippers. But whenever possible, I choose to work with high-quality scissors instead.

Because sc******ng allows me to:
• properly shape the coat, not just take it shorter
• create a softer, more natural finish
• refine and balance the overall look across all breeds and coat types
• tailor the groom to your dog’s structure so it grows out better

For some dogs, it also makes the experience much calmer, as there’s less noise and vibration compared to clippers.

But more importantly, it’s what creates that lasting finish you see not just when you leave but days and weeks later.

Using scissors properly isn’t just about cutting hair. It’s about understanding coat type, movement, and balance and applying that to every groom.

🧔 If you’re just looking for the quickest, cheapest groom…I’m probably not the right fit. 🧔

But if you want your dog or cat groomed properly, with genuine care, skill, and attention to detail…
you’re in the right place.

āž”ļø Swipe through to see what makes the difference

Because a high-quality groom is never about rushing to get it finished. It’s about taking the time to understand the dog in front of you, knowing how to handle a nervous dog without force, and having the knowledge to work with different coat types so they don’t become matted, damaged, or difficult to maintain. It’s about creating a finish that not only looks beautiful when you leave, but continues to last at home.

The reality is, much of the grooming industry is built around speed, more dogs, less time, and a focus on getting through appointments as quickly as possible. That’s often where standards begin to slip, where small details are missed, and where dogs can start to feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable with the process.

That’s why I chose to do things differently.

I work on a one-to-one basis, in a calm environment, where your pet has the time and space they need. This allows me to focus fully on both the quality of the groom and how your pet feels throughout the experience, combining a high level of grooming skill with an individual approach.

The result is a groom where you can see the difference, a healthier, more manageable coat, and a pet who feels more comfortable with each visit, rather than more stressed.

Whether your dog needs extra understanding, or you’re looking for a higher standard of grooming and a finish that reflects that, this is exactly what I offer.

🧔 Something lots of owners worry about… 🧔

ā€œWhat if my dog is too matted?ā€ I completely understand why owners worry about this.

Many people feel embarrassed or scared they’ll be judged for their dog’s coat condition. But here's the truth… life happens. We all have busy lives.

Sometimes a dog’s coat can feel fine one minute, then the next time you touch them you find knots and matting appearing seemingly overnight.

Certain coat types are prone to tangling quickly, especially after muddy walks, swimming, friction from harnesses, puppies coat changing, or even just sleeping.

I feel your pain with this because matting can creep up so much faster than people expect.
That’s why my focus is never about blame or making owners feel bad. Whatever the situation, your dog’s welfare and comfort always comes first.

At Vanity Fur VIP there's no judgement, no shaming and no making owners feel uncomfortable. I just want to help with advice, handling, and helping both you and your dog.

I’d always much rather someone reach out for help early than avoid grooming because they’re worried about being criticised.

āž”ļøHave you ever worried about this before? Feel free to message me if you’re unsure about your dog’s coat, it can be sorted.

🧔 I removed more ticks from dogs last week than I have all year...🧔

I'm seeing lots of dogs coming into the salon with ticks at the moment, so it's worth checking your dog regularly.

Common places to look include the ears (including the ear canal entrance), around the eyes, under the armpits, inside the mouth on the gums, and between the toes. Ticks start off tiny, like in the picture, but can grow to the size of a shiny grey pea when fully engorged.

āž”ļøUse a tick removal tool such as a Tick Twister and make sure the mouthparts are removed too.

Never be tempted to burn, squeeze, or pull a tick straight off, as this can cause it to regurgitate harmful bacteria back into your dog. Yuck!

Ticks can spread Lyme disease to both pets and people, and with both ticks and fleas thriving in Sherburn and surrounding areas right now, it's worth speaking to your vet about suitable preventative treatments.

āž”ļøIf you're struggling to remove a tick, give me a call on 07787 046684 and I'll happily take a look for you.
āž”ļøSave this post for later or share it with other dog owners.

I’m so excited to officially say I’ve now completed my cat grooming training with the amazing Julie Harris.

If you know me, you'd know I just can’t stop learning and expanding my knowledge. I’ve learned so much from this training, and it’s been an amazing opportunity to learn from someone with Julie’s experience and reputation.

I’ll be bringing everything I’ve learned into Vanity Fur VIP to help create a calm, gentle, one-to-one grooming experience for cats as well as dogs.

🧔 3 signs your dog may be fearful of grooming... 🧔

A dog doesn’t usually go from ā€œbeing fineā€ to snapping or biting for no reason. It's usually that they've been trying to tell us they’re uncomfortable with grooming way before the bite happens but unfortunately the early signs can be really subtle and easy to miss.

Here are 3 signs I always look out for:

1ļøāƒ£ Lip licking or yawning
These can be early signs of stress, especially during brushing, drying, clipping, handling, or being touched in certain areas.

2ļøāƒ£ Turning their head or body away
If your dog keeps moving away, looking away, leaning away, or trying to avoid what’s happening, they may be asking for a break.

3ļøāƒ£ Pawing, fidgeting or trying to stop the grooming
This can be your dog’s way of saying, ā€œI’m finding this too much to cope with.ā€

These early signs are often the only way your dog knows how to communicate how they’re feeling. When these signs aren’t listened to, some dogs behaviour can start to escalate because they feel they have no other option.

That might look like growling, snapping, or biting and this isn't because they’re ā€œnaughtyā€, but because they’re stressed, overwhelmed or it can be a sign that they are in pain.

This is where I often see dogs come to me already struggling with grooming, because they’ve been pushed through grooming instead of being supported through it. This is why early, positive grooming introductions are so important but often get dismissed.

At Vanity Fur VIP, I work with your adult dog or puppy to help them feel listened to. I adapt the groom where necessary to fit their needs, rather than expecting every dog to cope in exactly the same way. This doesn't mean grooming has to take longer, its about taking things at their pace, providing a trusting and calm environment.

If this sounds like your dog, or you have a puppy you’d like to start off the right way, feel free to message me.

🧔 Quick answer to a common question… can you groom a matted cat? 🧔

Yes, matted cats can be groomed, but it depends on how severe the matting is and how well the cat can cope.

Matting isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Tight mats can pull on the skin, restrict movement, trap dirt and moisture underneath, and become very uncomfortable or even painful for cats.

One thing many owners don’t realise is that bathing a matted cat before the mats are removed can actually make the matting tighter and worse.

In some situations, gentle clipping may be needed to safely remove the mats without causing unnecessary discomfort. The priority should always be the cat’s welfare and keeping stress as low as possible throughout the process.

The good news is that regular grooming and coat maintenance can often help prevent severe matting from happening in the first place especially in long-haired cats, older cats, or cats that struggle to groom themselves properly.

āž”ļø No judgement here either matting happens more easily than people think.
