This is Rocky the Labrador and his owner Jenny. To say that Rocky is like a different dog is an understatement and other people are noticing it too! They have now reached a stage where we are training Rocky to be fully off lead trained so that he can have the freedom he deserves. Today we worked on the little things that I expect a well trained dog to be able to cope with and Rocky took it all in his stride. He is learning a ‘close’ command and to not barge out of the car just because the boot opens! Control starts before your dog even leaves the car.
The moment the door opens is where the training begins. Teaching your dog to pause, wait, and look to you before rushing out builds impulse control that carries over into so many other situations.
Chaos often leads to more chaos — a dog who practises exploding out of the boot is rehearsing that behaviour every time. Calm, consistent routines create calmer choices.
A few seconds of patience can make every adventure safer.

In many public places, your dog doesn’t have to be on a lead—but by law, it does have to be under control. If your dog runs up to other dogs because “he’s friendly”, then it’s not under control. Share away for the humans at the back!

‘But his tail was wagging...’ ..is one of the most dangerous phrases I hear.
A wagging tail doesn’t mean a dog is friendly.
It doesn’t mean a dog is happy.
And it certainly doesn’t mean a dog won’t bite.
A wagging tail tells you one thing: the dog is emotionally aroused.
That emotion could be excitement, frustration, fear, anxiety, or even aggression.
Stop judging dogs by their tails.

Reading dogs isn’t about spotting one signal—it’s about understanding the whole picture. That level of observation comes from years of hands-on experience, not just hours in a classroom.
The more we learn to read dogs properly, the safer we make life for both dogs and people.

I was warned that I had my work cut out with Toto, who pulls on the lead and is super reactive. But check out this little lady on her very first 1:1!! Well done to her owner Sue. Better handling, better communication and a better life !

I bang on about these tools all the time and it amazes me that some of the ‘force free’ folk out there are using them ! Even worse, they are recommending them too! If this doesn’t show you how aversive this tool is in its natural state (I.e you can’t switch it off) I don’t know what will! 😢
