🐄🥛 From Feed to Milk: How Does a Cow Make Milk? 🥛🐄

Great milk starts long before the milking parlor. It starts with nutrition, digestion, and care!

Ever wondered what happens inside a dairy cow between the feed bunk and the milk pail? Here’s the journey, explained by VetsAll:

🌾 Feed In: Forage and feed enter the digestive tract
🦠 Rumen & Reticulum: Microbes ferment and break down fibrous feed
🔄 Omasum & Abomasum: Water is absorbed and true digestion begins
🧬 Small Intestine: Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream
🩸 Blood Supply: Delivers nutrients to the udder’s secretory cells
🥛 Udder: Secretory cells turn those nutrients into milk, which is stored until milk “let-down”

🌟 The Four Pillars of Milk Production:
🥗 Nutrition: Proper feeding leads to healthy milk production
🐮 Health: A healthy cow produces high-quality milk
🛡️ Care: Regular care ensures better yield and welfare
📈 Production: Good management today, more milk tomorrow

💧 Common Diseases & Their IV Fluids: Your Quick Clinical Cheat Sheet! 🩺

Right fluid, right patient, better recovery! Save this chart from VetsAll for your next clinical rotation or shift.

Fluid therapy is one of the most powerful tools in veterinary practice, and choosing the right fluid matters. Here’s a quick visual guide to the fluids commonly used for frequently seen conditions:

🧂 Normal Saline (NS): Dehydration, DKA, heat stroke, and hypovolemic shock
💧 Ringer’s Lactate (RL): Burns, sepsis, gastroenteritis, and hypovolemic shock
🍬 Dextrose (D5W, 25% or 50%): Hypoglycemia and hypernatremia
⚡ 3% Hypertonic Saline: Severe hyponatremia
🩸 NS, RL & Blood Products: Acute blood loss
🧪 Sodium Bicarbonate: Selected cases of metabolic acidosis
🏥 DNS or Dextrose Saline: Postoperative fluid maintenance

⚠️ Important Reminder: IV fluid choice always depends on the patient’s condition, electrolytes, blood pressure, kidney function, and veterinary clinical judgment. This chart is for educational purposes only.

💉 Injection Routes: Know the Right Way, Ensure Safety! 🩺

The right route, the right angle, the right technique: every injection counts!

Whether you’re a vet student, technician, or practicing veterinarian, mastering injection routes is a core clinical skill. Here’s your quick visual guide from VetsAll:

💪 Intramuscular (IM):
📐 90° angle, inserted deep into the muscle
✔️ Ideal for drugs that need steady, gradual absorption

🔹 Subcutaneous (SC):
📐 45° angle, into the subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)
✔️ Commonly used for slower, sustained absorption

🩸 Intravenous (IV):
📐 25° angle, directly into the vein
✔️ Delivers drugs straight into circulation for rapid effect

✅ Pro Tips:
🎯 Use the right route for the right drug
🛡️ Maintain sterile technique to prevent infection
💉 Choose the proper needle size and length for each route
📋 Always follow withdrawal periods

⚠️ Reminder: Site, angle, and technique can vary by species, patient size, and the drug being used. Always follow the product label and veterinary guidance.

💧 IV Fluids : Know Your Fluids, Save More Lives! 🩺

Choosing the right IV fluid can make all the difference in patient recovery. Here’s your quick-reference guide from VetsAll!

🧂 Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl):
✔️ Treats dehydration and water loss
✔️ Dilutes medicines before injection
✔️ Cleans wounds
✔️ Helps manage low blood pressure (hypotension)

🌿 Ringer Lactate (R.L.):
✔️ Restores fluid and salt loss
✔️ Maintains electrolyte balance
✔️ Supports cases of diarrhea and vomiting
✔️ Helps maintain acid-base balance

🍬 5% Dextrose (D5):
✔️ Provides energy and helps treat dehydration
✔️ Used in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
✔️ Fuels the brain and body
✔️ Supports recovery from weakness, fatigue, and illness

⚠️ Reminder: Fluid selection, rate, and volume should always be based on a proper clinical assessment of the patient. Always follow veterinary or medical guidance.

🚨 A SMALL CLOT. A BIG EMERGENCY. 🐾

Aortic Thromboembolism (ATE) in Cats: Every Minute Counts!

Is your cat suddenly dragging its back legs, crying out in pain, or has cold, weak hind limbs? It could be Feline Aortic Thromboembolism (ATE), a life-threatening condition where a blood clot forms in the heart or aorta and blocks blood flow to the hind limbs.

🔍 What to Know:
❤️ Common Causes: Heart disease (HCM), hypertension, hyperthyroidism & blood disorders
⚠️ Key Signs: Sudden hind limb weakness or paralysis, pain and restlessness, cold paws, weak or absent pulse
🩺 Diagnosis: Physical exam, blood pressure check, echocardiography & imaging
💉 Treatment: Pain management, blood thinners, treating the underlying cause & supportive care

⏱️ TIME IS CRITICAL. Early treatment gives your cat the best chance to recover.

✅ Prevention: Regular vet check-ups, routine heart monitoring, and early treatment of underlying diseases can save your cat’s life.

🏥 ATE is a veterinary emergency. Seek immediate veterinary care.

🐱 Small parasites, big discomfort!

Is your cat scratching their ears or shaking their head again and again? It could be ear mites, tiny parasites (Otodectes cynotis) that live in the ear canal and cause intense itching and irritation. 🔍

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
✔️ Frequent scratching of ears or head
✔️ Head shaking
✔️ Dark brown or black waxy discharge
✔️ Redness and inflammation
✔️ Bad odor from the ears
✔️ Restlessness and irritability
✔️ In severe cases: head tilt, balance problems, or hearing loss

🐾 Higher risk: kittens, multi-pet homes, cats in contact with infested animals, and cats with poor grooming and hygiene.

🩺 What to do:
🔹 Diagnosis: a vet exam, ear swab, or microscopic check confirms mites
🔹 Treatment: vet-prescribed ear medication, gentle ear cleaning, and mite control drops. Treat all pets in the household and finish the full course.
🔹 Prevention: regular ear checks, a clean living area, avoiding stray animals, good hygiene and nutrition, and routine vet visits

🚨 Ear mites are highly contagious. Early action means healthy ears! Please don’t use home remedies without a vet’s advice, since a wrong treatment can make things worse.

💚 Healthy ears, happy cats!
