Dried mealworms available in-store:

Dried mealworms are important for nesting birds because they provide a highly concentrated, easily accessible source of protein and fat (up to 50% protein and 25%+ fat), which is crucial during the breeding season for adult energy and, more importantly, for the rapid growth of chicks. While they do not have the moisture content of live mealworms, they are a vital, convenient alternative that helps maintain the strength of parent birds and supports the development of muscles and feathers in hatchlings. Nestlings require huge amounts of protein to develop healthy bones and feathers, and mealworms provide a high-quality, easily digestible protein source that helps chicks grow rapidly. The process of building nests, laying eggs, and constantly foraging for food is incredibly energy-intensive. Dried mealworms provide a quick energy boost, ensuring parents stay strong enough to care for their young.
